Clunking and clanking but then it engages. Any thoughts? Just the right side.

Sometimes you can hear the actuator on mine engage, other times no noise at all. Not sure what does it, but usually I am just happy it goes into 4 WD, and ignore the sound.

Are your wheels straight? Putting into and out of 4x4 with turned wheels will cause damage. It's normal to hear engagement, but not clunking and pinging.

Not every time, but every now and then it makes a little more noise than I like.

Also, sometimes it takes longer than I would think it should for it to engage the 4wd. I'm almost always going in a straight line, but sometimes I'll turn the wheel to the left and then right if it's not engaging.

I'm wondering if there is something I can do to *improve* this.

I always engage mine while the clutch is in to help avoid some wear and tear while moving. I shift from 1st to 2nd I will turn the 4wheel drive knob while the clutch is in while shifting. I've never had a problem with clunking. I do the same when disengaging it as well unless i'm not moving. When sitting still always make sure the wheels are straight.
