I was wondering if anyone has changed their auto transmission filter on 05-08 5 speed auto transmission? I have read threads where they say that there isn't a filter in the transmission but when I go to order a gasket for the transmission pan the filter also pops up and you are asked whether you have a 2.7 or 4.0 liter. So apparently there is a filter not just a screen the others seem to refer to. I am looking to do a complete drain and fill using mountain lion's technique with the oil cooler line but would like to drop the pan in order to clean it because this is my first service on my 07 DCLB 4.0 4x4 with 85000 miles. Since I will be dropping the pan I should probably change the filter and was wondering how much of a PITA it would be, and if anyone could shed some light on this subject....

It's possible they just have the screen labeled generically as "filter" in whatever parts program you were looking at.

Yes that is possible but would like to know if it is a difficult job to change it as I cannot find anyone who has done this job.

Not difficult, but tedious. Hardest part is keeping everything clean and dust free.
Than removing oil pan. Have some spare oil pan bolts just in case. Removal and installation of oil pan bolts have to follow pattern

Why would you want to change the screen if it isn't damaged?
