Although I don't usually go 55 miles, I'm always surprised by how much more I have till I've filled the truck up with 21 gallons. I usually only hit 19 or so gallons when I'm filling up at the pump.

From past posts there seems to be some deviation in when the light comes on. Mine come on pretty religiously at about 17.4 gals, giving me 3.6 left. I have filled up 20.6 gal a couple of times.

Best way to figure out your truck is to fill up as soon as the light comes on a couple of times to see how much it takes. Then you know whats left after subtracting that from 21.

That's a question to ask these people that like to run 50 miles after the light comes on. Once they start posting about dropping the tank to replace the pump you'll have to ask them how long they wait to refuel.:D

That is an interesting point, and one that I've been following over the last two trucks and 13 years. Lots and lots of internet conjecture, and posts like this, but little to no actual fact of failures. Only actual fact that I ran into was for the Chebby/GM full sized about 10 years ago that had a few failures. I have yet to see anything definitive on the Tacoma or on my last truck, a Dakota.

BTW, ran my Dakota for 8 years running the tank down to a gal or two, same for the Tacoma over the last 5 years. My personal experience, myth, and I've yet to see a Tacoma pump failure at all, much less where it fails and they've stated they were a low-tank-filler...

This^^ Was driving through Colorado and right as we left a town the light came on but I wasn't nervous until we went a ways with no gas stations only to find out that the only gas on the map was 20 miles back. Drove another 50 miles before we found gas. Filled up and I only put 19.5 gallons in. I was on the actual E, far below the line. The light no longer scares me one bit.

In my 2012, the light comes on with about 4-4.5 gallons left.

I have a 2012 as well and it's gotta still have about 4.5 gallons left in the tank when the light turns on

My 2014 V6 TRD dblcab. had about? 2 1/2 gallons remaining when I refilled. FUELLY.com showed 20.2mpg.

Drive around with a full fuel can in the bed. When the engine dies, there's your answer.

My first fuel up was right as the light came on. 16.2 gallons.

My second fuel up was 45 miles after and I put in 19 gallons.

Fuelly shows 20.7 after 4 fill ups.

    Depends on the truck

My 02 and 06 could go until the guage touched the E and never ran out so i too never feared the light.... however, I ran out out of gas in my 14 a few weeks ago and was only 1/2 way... I've pumped 21gal in my 06 and 20.4in my 14 after putting 1 gallon in to get me to the station.
