Ok, so I would like to install a 12v socket in my headliner near the rearview mirror. The purpose for this is to be able to charge my phone without having cables running all over the place. Basically I need to know what I could tap in the area for keyed power. Can I tap the map lights?

Pic for reference. The area I'd like to put the socket is (very poorly) circled in red:

I don't think there's anything in the immediate area that I'd tap for a power source. It's easy enough though to run a separate wire. Pull the pillar cover off and run a wire from the in-cab fuse panel to power the plug and all wires would still be concealed (you can tuck the wires into the front of the headliner to get from the pillar to your location). That way, you'd be on a separate circuit and fuse.

Also, why would you put a plug up high to charge a phone? That would mean the wires would be dangling... Have you considered putting a 12v power source either in the glove box or center consol, or even the cubby below the radio (in the back so you don't have any wires visible). Just seems like the power source up high like that is sloppier than using the existing power outlets in my opinion.

I can make a short power cable for my phone, getting rid of any slop. I already have a 10 ft. usb to micro usb running through the headliner, down the pillar and through the dash using the current 12v sockets, so it wouldn't be that much of a challenge to do what you suggested and tapping a 12v source near the fuse panel. I was just hoping to be able to tap into the map lights. But if that's not recommended, I'd rather play it safe and just run a longer wire...
