I'm planning on buying me a good rod and reel thats about 7' long. I've seen a few post and pics of people using the bed rails in the back to make a mount kind of like this [IMG]

But my problem is I don't have the bed rail tracks when I bought my truck. The previous owner took them off for some aweful reason. I think there would be a lot of good uses out of them but I'm not sure how much they cost for the two sides and the front rail. Does anybody know of another way to mount something that will old my rod and reel?

If you have the tow hitch, you can get holders that go on that. There are tons online, or if your a DIYer you could make your own. I think Amazon has just the rod.

    http://www.amazon.com/Shoreline-Mar..._sbs_sg_3?ie=UTF8&refRID=077F5H6YFPKATBH5ZEQV

    http://www.amazon.com/Seasense-Sing...1394716790&sr=8-8&keywords=fishing+rod+holder

Just google hitch mounted fishing rod holders and you will find tons. I've been wanting to build one of the carts that carries a cooler and all my gear that I can just stick in my hitch, but I haven't yet.

You can attach some ski racks? Holds them down nicely while hauling on the freeway

That one is actually kinda neat since its a little lower than the rail tracks.

Sorry about going off topic, but what are those notches normally used for besides a fishing rack?

It looks like you can still do it by mounting something using the existing rail holes. Make a bar out of wood or plastic to mount to the existing holes, then mount whatever you need to the bar.

I would steer clear of a hitch holder if you plan on using your bed-- would be a total PITA to get in and out of there with rods in the way.

Also, I know it looks cool but avoid driving on the highway with your nice fishing rod sticking up. At worst it will break, at best it will become loaded with bugs. It kills me when I see guys doing that.

Yeah right now I just have my rod laying in the bed of the truck with the reel close to the cab and the tip resting on top of the tailgate.

I do a lot of fishing and didn't want to sacrifice any of the little space I have in my bed so what better way than to have it custom alum.

I actually found it in another thread and posted that pic. I just bought the rails that hold the bed cleats since my truck didn't have any when I bought it. Still gotta work on mine too
