Thanks Husker99. I really like what Dave has to say. Even though I still have 2 Credit cards... 1 Visa and 1 MC. I use them like Cash, always have, never paid a fee. For my business it's a lot easier to have a CC for car rentals and such. But I rarely even use it then. I'm going to mull the idea over about selling the beloved Taco. I really have to run some #'s tonight with different scenarios. I'm going to look at it in a bigger/long term picture. rather than just looking at the next 2-3yrs... stretch this out 5-10yrs to getter a better fiscal picture. Only thing we owe on is the house and my Taco. Trying to get the point where We only have the House, so we can really attack it.

I can get a decent MK3 '90-'92 5spd Turbo for about $8k with about 100k on it. Man I have the itch. Back into a fun Turbo Stick supra and no payments! Gotta run home and do the math on everything and think about it for about 1 week. Not to mention this would knock baby step #2 & #3 out of the park. 3-6 months emergeny funds and no debt other than the house.

Wife shot the Surpa idea down pretty hard, can't blame her. Did some looking around I can pick up a 4cyl Turbo 5spd Saab sedan at a good price and get over 30mpg's hwy. 9-3 model. Save me about $33k over the next 8yrs vs keeping the Taco. I ran the numbers to a tee.

I know what you mean about wanting to jump back into an older cheaper car. There are days where I think about getting rid of the taco for a clean second gen 3000GT VR-4 for near all cash up front, maybe a 3 year loan to pay off in 1-1.5yr or such and mod it into a 450-500hp awd beast. I do miss my old '92...

However, on the flip side once the tacoma is paid off.. I'm 'hoping' it should last several years after with no payments and little to no major maintenance issues... For now I'll just continue to enjoy the truck and worry about it another day :D

Sounds like you have convinced yourself that selling the Taco is the way to go. Only you know the financial situation you are in. I admire you for living within your means. The reason our country is so screwed up financially is because of people not living within their means and the banks continuing to give these same idiots loans. I bought my Tacoma because of the expected longevity of the truck and the outstanding resale value. I would imagine that once you finally make that decision to sell her, you won't have a huge problem doing so. Right now may not be your best opportunity however due to the $1500 cash, the fact that dealers are moving and dealing more agressively on '09s, and because people are buying new because of the government's disguised auto bailout aka "Cash for Clunkers."

Good luck with your decision. I know it's not an easy decision to make.

Thanks guys. Yeah I slept on it, and am 99% sure it's gotta go for a decent price, can't give it away or it will defeat the purpose of why I'm selling it ya know. I think I'm going to try and get a $10k 2006 Saab 9-3 Turbo 4cyl 5spd with about 50k miles from a private seller. No it's not a easy decision, but I don't like being a 21st century slave of my own doing. Just a slight # here... in a typical 15K (@$2.60/gal) mile yr, I'll save $657 on Fuel, Tag registration and insurance rates alone. I am amazed at how well Tacoma hold value, it's really insane. A 10-13yr old Taco is worth more than you think... But still, comparing keeing my taco for the next 10yr or selling it and buying a used car to keep for 8yrs and making up the 2yrs after that... I still save a boat load of cash. Over 10yrs I'll save $16k, not including any interest I'll make on the money sitting around. Oh well, I don't want a car payment for the next 2yrs... tired of it. I ditched my F250 b/c it was a moronic vehicle, the tacoma is much better suited, but still unsustainable & unjustifiable. I find myself driving on the hwy a lot, and driving all over gods green earth. I don't like the feeling of being tethered b/c of MPG's, and then ice it with the equity tied up and payments= Not for me. Freedom aint free... that goes for economic freedom also.

I personally prefer to buy new and maintain them myself, because then I absolutely know the vehicle will last, which saves me money in the long run.

My 03 Matrix has over 160k on it and still runs like new. Only thing I've ever had to have it into the shop for is standard service that I can't do myself (alignments, etc.)

It's up to you...bills never stop coming, but if you're looking to lower your debt load right now making some dough of your current truck may help.

The only debt I have is the car payment and student loans, so I'm not feeling the heat so much...

The only thing you didn't compare is the reliability between the Saab and the Tacoma. You seem to want a stick turbo. Go with a Subaru if that's what youd like. Your resale and reliability would be there. Saab's are hunks of shit. I bet it would be a shops favorite after 75k

Hhhmmm. Edmunds.com gave it green on all reliability. That sucks. Subarus are cool, but the WRX's have all been riced out and beat on. Plus My buddy has a Subaru Baja and it's frigin S M A L L on the inside. borderline a 2 seater with a 3' bed. That's the thing that pushes me away from Soob. You're the first person to say a Saab is junk... not arguing with you, but i'll research it.

Lots of folks are downsizing. My buddy has his '07 Avalanche up for sale (loaded, 22" rims, the whole 9 yds) and he is now driving an '04 S10 Blazer. Of course, we are probably losing our jobs in a year (govt contract) so it's a diff situation but still. I can see how folks would want to ditch the payment. Do what's best for you situation. You can get a truck later on.

What does that have to with it? Prices are also geographical.

Amen to that wilson. A truck is a truck at the end of the day, or at 5am. I did some researching on the Saab's... not the best comments from people. It's a mixed bag really. Some are saying it's b/c the owners let anyone work on them, others say their awsome, some hate them. So you can't really say Ya/Na.

More digging uncovered the Saabs are junk. It's like the only car worth getting would be a $9k Accord 4cyl 5spd with about 50k. I'm not even sure if a '09 qualifies for cash for clunkers

Honda makes a damn excellent car. I love my Toyotas, but I have my daily driver Matrix mainly because it was my best fit for my situation at the time I bought it. If I were looking for an around-towner vehicle right now, it'd be a Civic or Accord.

Honda's cars (Fit, Civic, Accord) and Minivans (Odyssey, Ridgeline) are best in class.

Too bad they don't make a truck. It'd probably be pretty good.

My brother bought a Fit 5spd Sport few yrs back when they first came out. Traded his LS1 Trans Am in on it, which had a blown Head gasket at 60k. He's got about 60k on the fit now. Only thing he's done is window tint, 1 set of tires and oil changes per the Light... which is about every 10k. And a seat belt buzzer thingy that went bad. That car is awsome. He's saving money hand over fist. His usual fill ups are 8 gallons which is a tank per week; it's only got like a 9 or 10gal tank. It takes 4qts or 4.2qty of 5w-20 oil. Total El Cheapo Box. Would I buy one.. not really. I do a lot of hwy driving which that buzz box is not really suited for. But the quality of that car is Grade A hands down. Fit finish, rattles etc. So after researching and thinking about the idea of selling my truck all weekend, it's keep the Taco or get a good used 2005-2006 4cyl 5spd Accord under $10k. Any other option would seem to defy the point of selling the Taco. I'm looking to reduce the amount of equity I have in a vehicle, get rid of a monthly payment, and have a simple, reliable, good on gas vehicle that is good for Hwy trips with 4 adults and luggage. Not to mention I can get a good Bike rack for the accord cheap. I mountain bike every weekend just about. So that solves the bike issue. Other than that.. I have no utility need for a truck on a regular basis other than I like to camp, off-road and such about 1x yr, and lately I can't remember the last time I've gone b/c how busy we are in life now. so.. the only thing I need to worry about is me, wife, 2 passengers, my bike and briefcase.
