leer cap

I'd say my cap is 300 pounds (unk) (leer 100xq), added it to a stock dc 6spd. I got a hit on MPG.

 

I like Leer. Just bring your wallet because they're damn proud of their stuff. Before deciding on which cap to get I recommend thinking long and hard about what you might want to do with it down the road. Like OZ said, the 100RCC can carry a heavy rooftop load. If you buy something that can only handle a Thule or Yakima rackload, you're limited to that forever because you can't just put a beefier rack on a non-reinforced cap to make it haul more later on. Decide on potential use first--then go shopping. My two centavos.

 

Mine's at least the same , 100RCC , the commercial version of the 100R

 

Mine too. Even with the roof rack it remained the same.

As for storing it, if you have a garage, look into making a hoist system. My hoist is as simple as 4 eye hooks bolted into the ceiling joists and 2 heavy duty 3" ratchet straps. I can remove and reinstall my cap in less than 5 minutes if I need to move something that won't fit in the bed with the cap on.

My hoist process is:
-Hook the straps into the eye bolts
-Back the truck into the garage (using the hanging straps as a guide)
-Remove the 4 clamps that clamp the cap to the bed and unplug the brake light wires
-Lift up the cap enough to slide a 2x4 block under each side (leaves room to slide the strap under)
-Slide the straps under, one in front, one in back.
-Ratchet the straps a few times to lift it up 2-3"
-Then drive out from underneath it.

 

Found a double cab short bed leer 100XQ for $800 but I really want the 100XL.

 

yea im leaning towards the 100xr with the wilderness package,seams practical for my lifestyle & its gonna be great for the dog

 

I've been trying to get an accurate quote for how much these weigh since I bought it. Wanted to make sure I was building a proper garage hoist system that could support it and whether or not I needed to do any weight distribution in the attic. One guy at the shop that sold it to me said it weighed 150 while the other guy there said it weighed 400. After much searching I was able to find a direct phone # to Leer and asked them. The guy there didn't have one of ours but he had an identical unit for an F-150 with a 6-1/2' box. He took it and physically weighed it and said it was exactly 250lbs. I figure that makes mine around 225 or so.

 

Good to know , the rep where I bought mine said " about 200 lbs "

Old thread about to get revived...

I bought my truck with the shell on it. I've been trying to find a weight for this Leer 100R shell, so I can build something from the rafters in the garage to store it. I have a feeling I'll be over-designing the setup to account for guessing what it weighs - at least until I can weigh the truck without it.

Why is it the manufacturers don't put some reference to actual weight??

 

Even worse is that it's like pulling teeth just trying to get ahold of the manufacturer directly without having to go through a dealer that doesn't know what they're talking about. I got lucky the time I was able to locate their number once, but didn't write it down and can't find it anymore.

 

I love my Leer 180 , had one on my Dakota also .
