I am shopping for a new(er) truck, time to get out of my 13 MPG 01 z71 with 200,000 miles.

I am really interested in the Tacoma. I am going to look at a one owner DCSB TRD 4WD with 68,000 miles. The pics of the truck look great. It appears to be in excellent shape. Owner says all maintenance has been done at the dealer he bought it from and that he's never taken off road. He's asking $22,500.

Are the any issues with the 06's that I need to look for?

    Thanks

Had an '05... two 'major' issues:
Spiral (clock spring) Cable fail that causes air bag light to come on.
Rear springs too soft, double cab or access cab will bottom-out with any cargo.

My 2010 has been about perfect so far... as was my '01.

You could go buy a new TRD dcsb for 8k more! If you are willing to pay 22k for an 8 year old Tacoma then you should get a new one.

Also be on the lookout for a timing cover gasket failure. Its easily identifiable if it has happened or is happening. There will heavy build up of oil and deposits on the power steering pump.

Not really! They're all the same from 2005-2014.

Common items to fail are front wheel bearings, and the rear springs starting to sag. Both are a pretty easy fix. If you like it, buy it!

    Obviously make sure it:
    Starts well
    Drives smooth
    No dash lights
    Quiet while driving
    Engine isn't making bad noises
Look for signs that the owner took take of it or did not take care of it. (Engine oil level is a decent indication.)

Price seems a little high too. By Canadian standards you'd be paying 18-20 for that.

Agreed. I know Toyotas hold their resale very well, but that's an 8 year old truck for 22k? No thx.

If MPG's are one of your main reasons for looking at a Tacoma, don't have your hopes very high. Real world numbers are very discernible for the 2nd gen dc's

I owned a 2006 TRD Off Road double cab and drove it for 175,000 before trading it in, if it could go wrong, I would have experienced it.

    (1) Exhaust manifolds can crack, replaced under TSB, very unlikely to happen, you will hear a ticking.
    (2) Cat Converter, replaced under TSB, rotten egg smell
    (3) Rear springs bottom out, replaced under TSB, look for shiny spots above the snubbers, very common on the double cabs.
    (4) front hubs can fail, but what truck doesn't. Mine failed one at 50K, one at 99K.
    (5) check for excessive frame rust and rotted brake lines. Mine were original at 175K but the brake lines were looking ratty.

Other than that, put gas in it and drive it!

22.5K is too much for a 06. I got mine for that much. 2010 w/ 50K miles at the time.

Look elsewhere, there are plenty of good deals around for less than that.
MPG depends a lot on driving style. I get 19-20 for Hwy, 18 for around town. When I was younger, I would have gotten 15-17.
