Odd "clank" noise when braking...

    So for a while now I've been noticing a strange "clank" noise when applying the brakes. It only seems to happen when changing direction (forward to reverse, or reverse to forward) and then applying the brakes. It usually wont make the "clank" until the next time direction is changed.

    When it started, my first thought was worn out rear brake shoes that had a little play in the drum, partly because I actually thought the noise was coming from the rear. Well I swapped the ENTIRE rear axle assembly for one with an e-locker, and although the locker works fantastically :D the exact same noise was still present...

    So that narrows it down to the front...

    I had the front wheels off today swapping wheels, and I glanced at the pads just to check they're condition, and they at least look like they have plenty of life left on them, but I didn't really mess with too much and try to wiggle anything around or anything; didn't really have too much time to fool with it as it was getting dark.


    Has anyone ever had such a thing happen? If so, what did it end up being?

    If not, anyone have any ideas?

    It doesn't seem to have gotten any worse or better of the past 5 or 6 months.

    I consider myself pretty mechanically inclined and I have no problem exploding everything apart and fixing the problem, I just wanted to see if maybe there was something common that causes this on these trucks to give me a direction to go.

    Yes
    Hopefully the above solved your issue; however, if it didn't then search this forum for 'Axle wrap'. From your description of your issue it sounds exactly like that might be the cause. You even mentioned that you swapped out your rear, check the fittings and bushings. There are many lengthy posts walking through fixes for axle wrap.
