Blacking out my taillights

So I did the mod for my headlight were you take them apart and paint the appropriate chrome areas black. It came out great. Has anyone tried or is it possible to do the same type of mod on the taillights. I don't want to blackout the lenses because I still want them fully funtional for obvious reasons. Any input or help would be appreciated.
