taco "too light" for a uhaul trailer?

Check the laws where you will be towing as well. Here in Cali if the vehicle isn't legal to drive on the street, then it cannot be towed with any wheels on the ground. Also, as far as Uhaul goes, you can argue all you want and make all the points you want about the weight of the vehicle and your tow vehicle and it will make no difference. If the computer says your truck can't pull it, they wont rent to you.

 

I ran into the same situation years ago. So I rented the dolly instead. Towed an old 73 firebird about 300 miles, couldn't even tell it was there.

Over on the Jeep forums you see many posts of people complaining that Uhaul won't rent them any trailer if they have a soft top. The same jeep with a hardtop is fine. I don't understand the logic, but it probably makes sense to the Uhaul lawyers.

 

What kind of car are you towing. I rented one with my current tacoma just told them I was towing a small be bug so the weight wouldn't be an issue and bad off I was.

 

I towed My old Mazda B2300 from Delray Beach, FL to Flagler Beach, FL (approx 275 miles) with my '10 Taco V6 4x4 on a U-haul flatbed on cruise control at 75mph... Piece of cake. I regularly tow boats around 20' or less with the same set up. Obviously I opted for the tow package from the dealer when I bought it b/c I bought for that reason--to tow boats. My driveshaft went at about 45k (luckily still under warrantee) but neither did I (or the techs) have reason to believe the towing was associated. Hope this helps!!

 

While it will WORK, it is not a good idea. IF by some chance you were in an accident, the insurance company could deny your claim because you were illegally towing.

Best suggestion if at all possible to do.

No law in Cali states that. Here is the statute listing in California for towing. Nowhere does it say a towed vehicle, regardless of wheels on the ground, must have tags.
