What type of surface are you on when you're trying to engage it?

It will not engage if there's any 'torque' on the driveline. AKA - when engaging into 4WD, be on a flat level surface with wheels straight. If you are on a level surface, move the truck slightly forward or backward to release torque on the driveline.

Do you have any lights on the dash - and what are they doing when you try to engage 4WD?

Do you have a manual transmission or Auto? Do you have a stick actuated 4WD?
    Do you have manual hubs?

well i just got this truck a few weeks ago and i when i test drove it i put it in 4 lo and it did what 4 lo does but a light never came on so i just thought i didn't come on no big deal because the gears were low like what its sopotsed to be in 4 lo. so today we got about 4 inches of snow and when i went to move it i put it in 4wd so i wouldnt tear up the yard. i was happy that it worked and later i went out to go get a bite to eat and i put it in 4wd and the light didnt come on well the 4wd didnt kick in. the rear end slid down in the ditch and i had to get pulled out by my dads jeep. 9 days and owning the truck and i have already got stuck

When you were in 4lo - were you absolutely certain you had 4WD?

In other words - how do you know WHEN it is and WHEN it isn't in 4WD??

You can be in 4lo (gearing) but the front wheels may not actually be 'driving' or the front wheels aren't engaged.

I don't remember if the 1st gens had a 'light' or not...(jesus, I used to own one myself and I can't frigin remember).

Do you have manual hubs?? If the hubs are not engaged - you will not have 4WD.

Just trying to figure out if you have a problem with the front wheels engaging or not......

Start it up, put it in 4 hi. Turn it off set the brake, chock the wheels.
Slide underneath and see if you can spin the front drive shaft.
If you can then it's not engaged at the differential.
I don't know how the adds work buy maybe without starting it, put it back in 2 hi and see if it spins. If it does maybe the add isn't locking in?

Put blocks in front and back to help prevent the truck from rilling.

If the drive shaft can spin freely when it's locked in 4hi, then I would say that you have several possibilities.
First one, the transfer case is not locking in the front drive shaft. That would indicate something broken inside the transfer case. The shift lever moves a fork inside the transfer case to engage or disengage the the front output shaft.
Second would be the ADD is not engaging the front CV shafts out to the wheels.

it wouldn't spin when in so called 4wd. i started it and push the leaver up so 2wd and let it roll forward cut the truck off and it would spin. i just took it to a local machanice. hopefully we can find something out
