1986 toyota pickup help needed

I just recently bought a 1986 toyota pickup 4x4 with a 22r motor in it and it starts and everything but can't seem to keep it running. We changed the plugs, rebuilt the carburetor have a secondary gas line so it is getting gas, played with the timing. Not sure what it is, any help would be appreciated .

 

Couple guesses to throw out - choke on the carb not opening up fully, bad fuel pump / filter. Last engine I worked on with a carb was a Toyota 2F and that was a while ago. Good luck!

 

Are you trying to run it with the air cleaner off?
My buddy had this problem.

 

Yeah ill try all those and see if it solves the problem. And yes I am trying to run it with the air cleaner off

 

alright so i put everything back to gather and it is running now and keeping a better idle, every now and then it'll back fire. my next problem is the 4wd, it says that it is in 4wd on the dash but the shifter it feels like there is nothing there. So just curious how to fix this?
