So I have an interesting choice to make. This past Monday I got an email from the local Toyota dealer saying they were interested in buying my 09 Tacoma to fill their used inventory and were prepared to make a fair offer if I was interested.

Obviously this is good for them if they can buy my used and sell it for a profit, especially if I choose to upgrade to a current gen at the same time. I can appreciate that they want money, don't we all. My truck has 173k miles on it and I only bought it it 6 mos ago for a decent price due to high mileage. I'm thinking if I get a decent enough buyout and they come off the price of a 2014 it could be an over-all win for me.

I'm curious what has really changed in the last 5 years besides Entune and if there is more to be gained in the transition than simply dropping a bunch of miles that could possibly shorten how long I have to wait before I start fixing things.

Anyone know what has been added/changed in the past 5 years?

The "offer" being made is no different then driving the truck in off the street. You will not get any special sweet heart deal. I think half the folks on here have recieved the same or similar offers.

Only say this, so you don't get taken advantage of.

That said, I'm a sucker for a new vehicle.

Well I also take note of "fair deal" rather than "offer I can't refuse." The only reason I would hope for something exceptional is if they can beat what I paid (since I feel I got a good deal to begin with.)

I am a sucker for a new truck too. =oP I'm only even considering because the mileage difference.

Meh. I can wait for a more compelling reason to upgrade, she runs fine.

It's not a buyout, it is a trade in. Nothing special, almost everybody gets these letters. I got them from the Chevy dealership in town:eek: They're not as interested in filling their used inventory as they are selling a new truck!

I remember the first time I got one of those letters for one of my SAAB's. It claimed they needed used vehicles and that they were offering above book value to just buy it from me. I drove by one day to see what they would even offer and the lowball offer was so ridiculous that I was annoyed at myself for even using the gas to go check it out. With my Tacoma, I get these letters all the time, and they go right in to the shredder. The last owner of the house must have also had a Tacoma, as I still get these letters for him, and it's been my house for almost 4 years.

Marketing ploy don't go in!!!!! If YOU want a diff truck, then go in with all the tools knowledge research and shop dealers so you know what you are getting into. True car is pretty good except they shotgun your phone and info to dealers in the area, AND THEY CALL... But yeah, go in there knowing what you want and what price for trade and your next vehicle, and you will be golden. My .02

I get those letters every year, and I have a 5-lug in CO.

Yeah right, they need 5-lugs on their lot, had to special order it! :p

I just traded in an '05 DC with over 200K on it for a 2014 OR DC. Had hail damage and they still gave me over 7K for it (same as CarMax) so these trucks hold some value.

    As for my 'Upgrade':
-Lost my outside temp display (in the WTF Toyota category)
-Radio/Sound system and road noise seem worse
-Lost the old cup holder which fit a beer w/ a koozy or coffee cup in it. (thankfully ordered the 2005 part to replace those stupid rubber cup liners)
-Lost a few square feet off the bed extender (top of the WTF category)
-Lost that little net inside the console (also in the WTF category)
-Gained an Ipod interface to the radio, USB, and extra charging port and some LED lights
-"Gained" this swishy squeak when I touch the brake pedal (it seems to be a 'feature' of the OR package), it makes driving such a 'dream' (This is in a "Seriously WTF" category all by itself)

But the thing I am most "stoked' about is after only 1000 miles on it, I got that comforting and familiar rear leaf spring squeak back!

I'd drive the '09 till it died.

Great feedback all! You speak directly to my fear about upgrading dead, I like my cupholder in the 09... it fits big fat Nalgene bottles. I have 0 valid complaints about the 09 so I'll just stay with it. Good to know (or bad) that everyone gets the call/letter for a "buy back", I'll just delete them henceforth.

Ive gotten those too, immediately tossed in the trash. no one ever gets a good deal from a car dealership imo, and if you think you did, then I have a bridge to sell you.

the sad thing is that enough people must get suckered by for them to keep sending those out.

its more of a side-grade than an upgrade tho.
