I have a crack in my windshield that started as a chip in the lower right corner and grew to about 8" inches and stayed that way for about a year and i just chose to ignore it. That is until we took a trip to Yosemite and it got snowed on. The crack suddenly grew to the point where it runs horizontally almost entirely across the windshield, 4-5" inches from the bottom. It stops about 6" inches from the left side(for now). So now I can't really ignore it. My question is can I safely drive it home? We're still in Yosemite and have a 4-5 hour drive to get home tomorrow. I can probably find someplace (Oakhurst maybe?) to get it fixed here but I expect it will be more expensive and just a hassle to deal with on vacation. It's not really a visibility issue but I'm sure highway patrol wouldn't see it that way if I was to get pulled over. I don't mind taking my chances with a ticket, just wondering if its likely to fail catastrophically on the drive home.

You can still drive it. You should see the windshields of most cars in my area. They spray boulders on the road for snow and ice. So stupid. Dunno about there but here its anything longer then 6" could get you told to get an inspection by the cops. But mine goes from one side to the other. Has all winter
My friend owns the body shop so I've gotten away with "it's on backorder officer, even call and ask" for about 3 months lol

The reason for the ticket in such cases is it is unsafe.

Windshields serve a critical role in a rollover accident. Your "A" and "B" pillars (and "C" if Xtra or Double Cab) support the roof but the windshield also supports the front of the roof when there is a vertical load placed against it. Likewise, just like crumple zones on a car, the breaking of the windshield takes energy away from the impact when crushed down. A cracked windshield is a compromised windshield and you reduce or lose that protection.

That being said, other than the threat of a ticket, replacing it is up to you. Personally, I'd wait until I got home but YMMV. If you are that concerned about every possible thing that could go wrong in life, you'd be driving a Prius while wearing a helmet with HANS device and a bubble wrap suit.
