Pulaski FTMFW! I fought wildland fire for 5 years, we use the shit out of them and that digging end comes in real handy.

I have used both wood and fiberglass handles, the wood will last if you take care of it but I have broken a few of them. I prefer the fiberglass handles, they seem to hold up to abuse a little better. Not a whole lot to look for, just sturdy construction and don't buy super cheap and I doubt you will have any issues. That being said, I highly doubt that you will abuse that thing 16 hours a day all summer long so if you like the wood, go for it.

    Gransfors Bruks...

Pretty sure there's a whole thread on Expo asking why people carry axes.. With more than a few people convinced that they are useless.

I've been lusting after a Gransfors for quite a while, those Husqvarna (Wetterlings) are pretty damn sweet as well. But, for now, I've got a Collins Boy's Axe that fits perfectly behind my drivers seat. Not really a fan of putting stuff on the roof/bed unless I'm out on the trail; it's just going to rust up there, and I'm fairly certain some asshat would steal it.

    X2 on the Pulaskis

Another awesome tool is a hoe. Or is it 'ho? I was really skeptical until I used one that my friend brought along. Made quick work of clearing snow from under tires.

Not sure if you are familiar with these but we use them in fire also and they are more versatile than a hoe. Pretty awesome tool.

That looks pretty cool, I'll have to check them out.

Side note: Just ordered one of those Baofeng UV-82s off of Amazon, only to realize that it's going to take 3 weeks to ship.. Kinda bummed, since that's going to be about the time I'll be leaving Kodiak. Then I find out there is a US distributor that'll ship them out overnight..

throw it up for sale on expedition portal when you get it...buy the one from the US distributor and swallow a bit of extra cost if needed..

A slew of pricey stuff my wife hates me for.

Those come standard now in the Army. Handy because they break down small, but not as rugged as a pickaxe, shovel, and axe.

I broke a ton of the army kits. I personally wouldn't waste my money on one.

That's exactly what I was thinking of doing..

I'm interested to see how they perform. Through researching for a few days, I was steered away from the cheaper UV-5 to the
UV-82. Going to use it to plug into the local repeater.

Figured I'll keep it in the truck when I get home, as a backup to my Yaesu mobile.

I'm sure it's been covered before, but anyone running a Baofeng?

ended up stopping by home depot on the way home from work and picked up the Husky
    [IMG]

construction seems solid...i'll give it a shot and see how i like the fiberglass handle..see if i can break it :D

then got a basic 4' round shovel to complete the set...

i have a feeling i'll be putting both to use this spring/summer on some trail projects, so we'll see how they hold up for a budget buy..

You'll need two of them. Most people are too cheap for any trail comms at all, and the ones that do have something have their grandpa's cb mounted under the dash. At least with two of those you can give one to the tail gunner. I have Icom handhelds, but have a buddy that uses the Baofeng. Seems to get the job done but I'm on the Rx end.
