Ok so I started some repairs and it seems that I'm in over my head. First I tried to remove the steering rack to replace the bushings, but I can't reach the hydraulic lines to remove them. I had all the bolts out and the steering shaft loosened but still no dice.

Next is that my Haynes manual says to remove the rack to access the bolts to the LCA's for removal. I can't remove it. I've finally decided for the first time in a long time to have the dealership quote me on the job. 1600 and change folks!

I wan't to use my ES bushings but they will only replace the whole LCA for 230 a piece. 650 a side! And 350 for the steering rack bushings. They say you can remove the LCA's w/o removing the rack.

    So, do I

a: buy the new LCA's first and switch the bushings myself and give them to the dealer to install. ( I can get the LCA's from Toyota Dallas for 180 and change vs the other dealer closer to home for 230ish)

b: let them do it all and use factory bushings for the LCA's

c: have them do the steering rack bushings as well for 350.

d: do more research and do the rack myself and let the dealer do the LCA's

or any combination of the above.

Has anyone removed a steering rack on a first gen? How do you get those lines loose? I can't find anything on its removal and my manual makes the job sound like a cake walk. Sure just get in there and remove that! Yeah right....
