Here are the brands I have used and my opinions on them.

    Head Units

    - Pioneer - Best head units in my opinion for sound quality, all that I will ever use now. Their navi system is horrible though
    - Kenwood - Decent sound, but they use a Garmin based Navi system, so it's a lot better

Speakers are all about personal taste in music.

    - Kicker - My opinion best value for their dollar but not the best speakers.
    - Infinity - Great at reproducing mid through high range sounds, weak bass
    - Kenwood - Okay for a budget stereo, lacks on sound quality to me
    - Pioneer - About the same as kenwood
    - Sony - I bought sony speakers once, never again. Just sounded bad
    - JL Audio - Expensive, but very good at reproducing all frequencies. Best car audio speakers I've bought
    - Polk Audio - Decent prices, and good high and low frequency reproduction, mids lack definition.

    Amps, again personal choice

    - Pioneer - Clean, powerful and easy to setup
    - JL Audio - I had the 900/5 in my WRX, sounded amazing and one amp powered the whole car. Expensive (I paid $800 for the amp alone) and time consuming to setup, but once it was tuned it was the best audio system I've had.

    Subwoofers

    - Infinity - Over priced, and didn't hold up to my expectations.
    - Kicker - Again a great budget buy, but not the best.
    - JL Audio - Clean and hard hitting. This was my favorite sub, I had one 10" that provided just enough bass to round out the system I had in my WRX.

The Nav option is really the kicker here. If you want it built into the radio (or added on in the dash) the price rises so much. I wanted nav, but did not want to pay $200 extra or more on a unit with one in the dash (not to mention having to mount the gps antenna). I went with a midrange model that can do nav from my phone. This work for me since I do not use the nav more than about once per month. (see my build below - with costs).
