Kansas City, misery. Might be headed that way.

So I might be relocating that way from Arizona next month. What parts of town suck? Which are the decent places to live? Are big garages kind of a rarity around there? Or have I just been looking at the wrong ads?

I'd be looking to rent a house initially.

Also, could somebody please shed light on this "urban deer hunting" thing I heard about? It sounds like it could be glorious.

It all really depends on how much you're trying to spend really..

I lived for a little while in Overland Park and Olathe. Loved Olathe, nice houses and pretty good part of town. KC in general is a lot nicer than most of the places I've lived. You'll enjoy it.

I'm looking for a cheap rental initially. And honestly I'm fine over the border in Kansas as well. How is the Leavenworth area? Being close to the airport is good for me and avoiding the MO vehicle inspections would just be one less annoyance.

Leavenworth isn't too bad really.. Just all depends on what you're trying to look for. Another good site to check out and find out about local stuff going on is www.kcsr.org

i hate that site. bunch of whiny little bitches on there for the most part. i live in shawnee right now.

lenexa/shawnee/olathe/op are all about the same. nice suitable homes, but i never had to look for renting. i know apartments are ranging from 800-1200 month.

if i had to live on the missouri side id want to be in blue springs/lees summit area but those arent that close to the airport really.

either way if you make it out here, there is a rock park down in fort scott. plus id be down for meet&greet with some grub.

If you tag an out of state vehicle in Kansas you still have to have an initial inspection by the Highway Patrol. Basically they just check to make sure all the vin numbers match-up.

I know people that live in Gladstone, MO, Liberty, MO and Lenexa, KS and they all like those areas. Plenty of houses with large garages to be found. I've heard property taxes are lower on the Kansas side, but I suppose that doesn't matter so much if you are renting.

This is where you need to read and sift through all the crap with a fine tooth comb. As long as you don't act like a doucher on there, you'll be pretty well accepted. That forum has a killer "Guns, Military, Survival" sub-forum if you're into that kind of thing. Lots of FS's on items and that subsection is for the most part douche free.

I check periodically since I moved from the area and have been on more lately. Seems a lot of the core posters are gone but like I said, fine tooth comb and it works. I mostly stick to that certain sub-forum too. Been on the site since 2007 or so.

That won't be a big deal honestly. I'm just looking at not having to pay somebody to look at my vehicle and let me know it's OK every year or two.

The Lenexa area actually looks pretty good. I'm mostly just looking for a smaller place to get into initially so I can get a good feel for the area before jumping into buying or leasing a big place.

So it looks like I'm officially getting the job offer tomorrow, with two weeks to move.

Anyone have a hot lead on a ~$1000/mo rental house with a garage? Or a good place to look other than craigslist? I'm finding a bunch, but some of them seem kind of hinky.

I do not. But for that much you easily have enough for a house payment

I'm looking at renting for a year so I can put away enough for a big down payment. After that, I'm definitely looking to buy a fixer upper with land.

Going back to school and living in poverty for a couple years sort of killed all my savings.

Well I hope you find something that will work out. There's not really any members here. But I'm down for beer sometime.

Sounds good to me. I'm thinking I'll end up in North Kansas City in an apartment for six months at first due to not having a huge amount of funds to start with. (moving expenses are all reimbursed, but I have to front the cash) Then I'll either buy something with a couple acres or rent for a year to save up for a buy.
