First, a brief intro... I recently purchased by very first truck and yep... It's a Tacoma!! Lucky Me.

After finding this site I quickly realized I am not the only one who has fallen in love with this machine. So far I have added OEM roof rack, an A.R.E. cap on the back (Thule bars on order), Weathertech Floor Liners as well as a stubby stereo antenna. I have a clear bra package getting installed on Monday.

I can not help but to REALLY want to get some nerf bars and there seems to be a ton of choices out there. Feel free to throw out any and all recommendations. I will be doing some 4 wheeling but nothing too crazy, lots of camping, carrying of kayaks, and 85% of my truck time will be city driving to work and back and doing stuff with my family which consists of wife, 13mo old and hopefully one more soon. I have fallen in love with the n-fab bars but really like the 'bed access' feature. Unfortunately this seems to only be an option for long beds or access cabs not double cab with short bed.

    Any thoughts folks?

Thanks for allowing me in the club :)
I'll be sure to share as the truck evolves, and of course I will get me some pix up soon.

Nerf bars are for show and IMO take away for the look of the truck.

Welcome to the site by the way!

    Thanks for the replies folks.

You are correct, I am looking to use as a step. I have a couple kayaks, one of which is a 2 1/2 person 13.ft boat. The wife had a hard enough time getting it on the Subaru's roof rack, I am definitely worried about how we're going to get them up. I like the look of the n-fabs but it would be nice to have more 'stepping space' and preventing door dings is a nice side effect. I'll have to take a look at OEM running boards. Any idea of how easy they are to put on myself for a 2014? Any drilling?

While many consider nerf bars to be useless, it seems to me that their focus is on protecting the lower body from damage when off-roading. While I don't foresee needing that type of protection, my wife and I do appreciate the step-up assist provided by our nerf bars. One feature that negates the nerf bars from providing good trail protection (stick out too far from the sides of the body) is exactly the feature we wanted to add to the stock truck for our needs. The fact that the nerf bars are not attached to the frame and would get ripped off if we tried to use the truck in truly challenging off-road conditions is not a consideration for us. The design of our Aries nerf bars lets us use them to step on when entering/exiting the truck and lets me stand on them when cleaning the roof.
To the OP- if you don't need the bars to protect your truck from trail damage and instead just need them to provide you access to the roof, then you can find a good selection of nerf bars on Amazon. I chose the Aries over others due to their stainless steel construction (with black powder coating), but there are lots of others with different features.

Most Nerf bars made for a specific application (IE: Tacoma) will not require any drilling.

I don't consider them "useless" I consider them ugly. But, that is just my opinion so you know what they say about opinions;)

Now... actual " Nerf bars" will do little to protect the lower body from damage when off-roading. That is where sliders come in. Myself.... I would look at Avid bolt on sliders as they look better than Nerf bars and no welding required. You get the look of sliders with the functionality of nerf bars.

I got the black steel craft nerf bars. They look good, and they were dirt cheep. I personally think that sliders are ugly as hell.

You might want to look into buying a tire step.
