I was quoted $550 in labor for an '03 4x4 by my local dealership and they would have it done in a day (drop it off at 8am, pick it up at 5pm).

They should be dropping the tranny and transfer case as one unit. There is a little bit of extra time disconnecting the front shaft, shifter, breathers and sensors but shouldn't take them 10 hours to do it.

IMO, if you find a good shop, $100/hour is reasonable. There are times I don't have time to mess around trying to use a floor jack in a way it isn't supposed to or jimmy up a press or puller of some sort. When I need to get the wheel bearings done, I'm damn well dropping it off at the dealership and asking if it will be ready at the end of the day.

So I got it back today from a local shop. The clutch feels so light to push down. Is that normal? It seems to work fine. It lets out at the bottom where the stock one you would have to let your foot up higher and had more tension.

I wasn't trying to knock mechanics. I guess I was saying that if the technician is getting 20-30/hr, that's alot of overhead. The human body hasn't been solved either. Just think of all the advances in imaging and treatments in the last decade or so. You have to continue your education to be competent at anything. ..back on topic!

Its called flat rate. The dealership's book says it takes 10 hours to do the job so that's what they charge, even if it only actually takes two hours of elapsed time.
