new owner trying to diagnose squeak (its driving me crazy!)

Hello all! I recently bought a mint 95 2.4L tacoma with 150k on the clock. I noticed a squeal and replaced my shredded alternator belt and P/S belt at the same time. There is still a squeal/chirping noise coming from the engine. I only hear this noise if the RPM drops below 800 or when accelerating from 1200-2000. then it stops. It kinda sounds like it is coming from the top end. Valves? cam chain? any advice is appreciated.

 

Could be a bad bearing in an idler pulley.
Isolate by removing the belts, start the engine and see if the noise is still there.

With the engine off and the belts removed. turn the pulleys and the alternator by hand and listen for the noise.

 

Thanks for the reply. I had not thought about that, but the more i consider it that sounds like the pulley could be the culprit. It also might explain the wear on the alternator belt.

 

So after being overseas for 5 months I am finally back and able to attack this problem along with some other small issues this truck has. I have determined that it is the crank pulley(?) that is squeaking. I can see it wobbling when the engine is running. I cant seem to find a link to a repair manual online where the link isn't dead. any help there?

 

Does the chirping go away when you press the clutch in?

No it does not. I'm pretty sure its the crankshaft pulley. I when it doesn't squeak the pulley spins smoothly, and when it starts chirping i can see the pulley wobbling. this also corresponds to the shredded belt. Now the game of FSM i hate, how much stuff do i REALLY need to remove to get this stupid pulley out?

 

do you guys have a preferred website you order from? this damn pulley is more expensive than i anticipated.

im not sure whats wrong with the pulley. It has a good amount of play in it, and is squeaking. I guess i should stop being lazy and go to a wrecking yard. the closest one to me is a 2 hour drive.
