Hi!, any help would be appreciated! Not a mechanic, so sorry about terminology, can turn a wrench though.

    Short story,

    - recent ball joint change - Napa ball joint
    - shortly after notice alignment was off
    - also notices sloppiness handling and grease coming out of Pass axle area
    - brought back in, said cv boot was all torn up, changed out the front axle
    - re-aligned, truck felt better but allignment was still off (wheel to drivers side while driving straight.
    - then just recently steering does not return after a turn, have to really turn it back to get straight.
    - Washed it (bad salt and snow here right now) and had a look at area where the boot is.

    Drivers side.jpg the good side
Passenger side.jpg The not so good

Looks like part of it has busted off closest to the wheel? I've been in 4x4 lots lately as it has been weeks since I've seen pavement...lol. Nothern Ontario.

Is it ok to drive this on the hwy for about 500k until I can get it to somebody on Monday? Like I said lots of snow and salt will get in there.

Any ideas, of what you think happened or opinions would help, thanks in advance!

BUCKLE UP! It makes it harder for Aliens to pull you out of your Truck.
Spray the living shit out of the steering shaft u-joint down by the frame with rust penetrant, should loosen the steering up. [IMG]

I do see one thing, on the bad side you have the seal and plate missing from the CV shaft at the wheel. That missing will allow water and dirt/salt, etc to get into your bearing.

no you will not be ok to drive 500,000 miles (500k).

you might want that plate. but bearings are "sealed."

throwing parts at it wont simply fix the alignment. you have to get it aligned.

however if theres play, this can be due to steering rack bushings, bad rack, bad inner tie rods, bad outter tie rods, play in the steering linkage as its supposed to collapse, or even bad wheel bearings. but this would be indicative in unevenly worn breaks.

STOP going to napa. get the work done by toyota, a toyota shop, someone who specializes in front ends like a reputable alignment shop, and also quit using shit parts. your just going to keep replacing them. stay oem, moog, or better.

    Thanks guys,

Sorry, not 500k, 500 kilometers (Canadian eh!)

Think it will be alright for that...not sure, about 350 miles I guess.

I didn't know what type ball joint they were going to put in, asked after it was done, Told them I woulda liked oem or moogs, they said the napa has a warranty, so if there is play, they give money back.

Truck was alligned after this because steeting was now off (steering and alignment were fine before ball joint replacement), steering wheel is still crooked. Then the steering started not coming back on its on after a turn. Then I saw the seal and plate missing.

Anymore thoughts or quick fixes to get me 500 kilometers before a fix would be awesome.

The bearings are not sealed. The inner seal that goes onto the back of the spindle also has a matching seal on the plate that is missing on his CV axle shaft. This will allow a higher risk of dirt, debris, and water to get in, and increase the chance of the bearing grease getting out some as well.

Don't ever go napa, I'm sure you all know. That new ball joint last maybe a month before breaking on me... Ripped out the cv shaft, minor body damage... And a pissed off driver. All is well, but as we all know stick with oem or better!
