My son has a 09 stock 4 cylinder tacoma. He had it towed home last night. The fuel pump does not make any noise. I pulled a fuel line apart at the engine bay, cranked it and nothing. What I think is the fuel pump relay, is good. I jumpered out the normally open contact, cranked it, and nothing. A little starting fluid in the intake and it tries to fire. It feels like the fuel tank is bone dry.

My question is if I put gas in the tank will the fuel pump kick on. Does it have some sort of level switch or is it burned up. If the pump is fried I'd rather drop the tank empty.

    Thanks, Willy

at out of gas the fuel pump could overheat and be damaged trying to pump air.
it would be hard to believe he didn't know he was out of gas.
Be sure to check the various fuses; there may be more than one accounting for the fuel pump power before you tear apart. The relay may be fine, but another fuse be blown in the same circuit. Probably all 'injector' labeled fuses need to be checked unless you have a diagram. Possible if he went low on fuel the pump overloaded and blew one.
But if no fuel pressure and confirmed electricity to the pump connector, sounds like the pump.
CHeck to be sure no damage to wiring to tank too; lots of causes for this.
