So I have a phone interview for an internship in Manhattan. I'd really love to get this internship as it would be a great opportunity and would really help me get my foot in the door with a company in NYC.

However, I have never had a phone interview before. They have all been in person and I am a bit nervous for this interview. Does anyone have any tips or advice for the difference of a phone interview?

I know I should know the basics of the company, job requirements and duties, my strengths and weaknesses. Anything I'm missing?

    Thanks TW

When you are on the phone, stand while you are speaking. It will help with energetic tones.

Also, at the end of the interview, thank the person and call them by their name.

Keep in mind, since you have an interview, you are qualified. What they are interviewing you for is the soft skills (do you fit in, etc).

Have questions for them (growth and training opportunities, etc) so you sound interested.

Don't talk money. You are just looking for 'a great opportunity to learn and grow'.

    Good luck, bruda!

    ^^^ agreed. Also:

There are things that can be an advantage to them not being able to see you. You can have pen/paper out to take notes. Such as writing down the names of the people who are interviewing you or if they say something in regards to what kind of person they're looking for. Having that in front of you can help keep you from stumbling over something.

Write out ahead of time some general response notes to the typical questions you expect to be asked. Write on the front side of papers only and have them all out in front of you. You don't want them to hear you turning pages.

Are you using a land line or cell phone? If a cell phone, be absolutely sure you're battery is charged and you are in a place that your phone doesn't drop the signal.

It really helps. People generally sound more upbeat and confident when standing.

    A few bolts are different.
Before the scheduled phone interview, dress as if you are going to be in face to face interview.

Confidence booster. You feel the part, you will speak the part.

    Yes that.

Cause you never know they might want to face time you on your smartphone, just saying.

Gargle on some mouthwash very important to clean up your throat before an interview, dont want to be listening to cleaning thoat noises.

Corey the thread replies are dead on. I would also prepare my area...that is the area you plan to be on the phone. Ensure you have zero distractions & relative information organized in such a way you'll have easy, quick & quiet access to it. And practice, practice, practice. Get me of your homies to call you and grill your ass....repeatedly.

Finished my interview. Went pretty good. They guy (CEO of the company) seemed to really like me and like my "entrepreneurial attitude." He said he should be in touch in a couple days. Next step is a test assignment to see if I am able to handle the job well and then an actual in person interview.

Pay is only $500 a month and its in Manhattan but he said most of it would be research on my own and then come to the city 1 day a week to meet with city officials and him to discuss findings/developments/opportunities/etc.

    Good deal man.

My next question, $500 a month? How much time ? Is it going to open some doors?

Uh part time. He said I would probably only need to come to the city one day a week to talk with city officials, buyers, sellers, etc.

Im thinking I could get an apartment near Philly if I only need to go in once a week. That way I can work my other job as well as do this.

The company is a real estate start up.. so it could potentially take off and the founder and everyone working there be millionaires or it could flop and no one make anything. I would be working right with the CEO/Founder so it could be a big deal
