    No dumb questions,,just dumb answers.

You will get a loud clunk when the trans shifts on accelerating rpms,,sometimes. Depends on how far its moving. If it only moves a little bit and sets right back down after the shift,,it's unheard then, but rears it's ugly head at a idle. A broken mount can cause all kinds of headaches front to back.

Wrenching for it: You have to be careful where you pry or floor jack at on the rig during this. Light pressures with cushioned pry bars,,only on solid known surfaces, looking for rubber separations, witness marks left by a loose bolt or mount plate possibly. Lifting and looking carefully,,cant stress that enough.

Grab the trans tailshaft and try to wiggle it side to side first, brace yourself so you can shake the shit out of it. Move up to the motor mounts and peek at the mounts with a flashlight, looking for parted rubber and such. DO not lift on the oil pan and DO NOT lift on the trans pan and bellhousing bell. If you slide a floor jack under to put a bit more pressure on things,,use good judgement.

Mine does the exact thing. Just don't drive it enough to care to look into it yet

Mine just started doing the same thing, come to a stop and the noise rears it ugly head, put it in neutral and it goes away. I did notice today as I threw it in park, let it idle as I was loading up some tools and heard it coming from the rear. I suspect rear drive shaft, not quite sure but maybe an area to look into for you as well.

That's a HUGE help!! I could never pinpoint exactly where it was coming from.

Your also getting dim lights until 650+ rpm's??.

If so, a charging system and then battery check is needed.

Idle speed rpms??,,someone call out the correct cold idle speed and then hot idle for your auto's. (That's one question that may be laying there hidden,,and could be the root of cause,,lol)

Never really noticed the light dimming. But my truck does idle below 580

So I realized today that directly below my feet when sitting in the drivers seat is the steering rack. Is it possible for something in the rack to make noise/vibration when the truck is in DRIVE but sitting still?

The reason I ask is because the power steering system is one I have not yet serviced. I'm talking to the pump when I say I haven't serviced it yet but since they work together, I figure I'd ask.

UPDATE: it had to be the transmission. Little explanation here...

Got the truck without knowing service history. Pull up at a red light in drive and there was a very noticeable groaning/growling coming from the floor boards accompanied by a grinding type of vibration. Checked trans fluid. Looked like black coffee.

Did about 6 drain and fills until fluid was fresh and red. Shifted a tad better but still got the same noise/vibration from the floor boards. A lot less severe than usual and not as often.

Did 2 drain and refills with valvoline maxlife atf. The issue has almost all but gone away. It's still subtle but we will see after another 3 or 4 drain and refills. The fluid I first did the drain/refill procedure with was castrol transmax atf. Dex/merc to be exact. It's going to be nothing but maxlife from here on out.

Your first drain, screen clean, magnet clean and fill on page 1 looked like black coffee??

I would advise to not take cross country trips with it,,just short hops for a bit. Once the fluid cooks out to look like that, trans life can be very short and fail at the most inopportune times. Fresh fluid could be masking the problem for a bit.

You might get thousands of miles out of it still,,or it could go tomorrow. Be smart and make sure all is well before setting out to far.

My first drain poured out atf that looked like black coffee. I mean it was toast. I dropped the pan and changed the screen and cleaned magnets after the 3rd drain and fill. Then I drained and filled a few more times. 2-3 times a month I do a 250 mile round trip from Sacramento to Reno. Still at it too.

I kind of want the trans to just die if it's gonna die. The not knowing when part is the worst. So far it feels smoother and tighter than before. I'm gonna just drive it til it won't move forward any more.

What is your idle speed while in drive, compared to neutral?

I'm not sure at neutral but in drive it's at 600, maybe a hair less. I'll check neutral today.

Don't let your truck hear you say that,,be careful what you wish for.:p

If you do decide to repair and replace, don't do the trans exchange deals unless it warrants that. Find a smart shop and have them rebuild yours if possible.

I think you might have dodged a bullet, but not putting money on the table with a auto.
