I've copied my thread from the 1st gen forum hoping that someone crusing this section might be able to help. I've had a non-starting issue since immediately after buying this pick-up about a month ago.

After trying numerous things, this morning I replaced the coil, capacitor and rotar bug. When I had to remove the coil pick-up to get the old capacitor out I set the clearance to .005. I couldn't find anything in my haynes manual that gave a gap. Well the truck started but now idles very rough and misses and slight backfire when you blip the throttle and misses intermittently at about 2,000 rpm.

Could the gap between the coil pick-up and the flapper on the distributor shaft cause this? It seems like a timing issue now.

    Cross wired?

Update: Went back and looked at the other thread. Have you done a compression test? Are you losing oil? Does it blow white smoke out the oil cap if you take it off while running? The video looks like it's burning oil or coolant to me...depending on how it smells.

I had just used the vacuum line from the brake booster to suck seafoam through it. It's running clear no with no smoke. But bad idle.

Fuel pressure regulator? b/c I'm sure you already did a fuel filter
**Long shot but you could clean or replace the coolant temp sensor. It could be reading the engine cold and retarding the timing and over fueling the engine. Most of the time on the older engines there are two of them. One for the gauge and one for the PCM.
