    Hey guys,

I was backing out of a job site last week and while watching my right mirror to clear the car next to me, the left side of my tailgate got aquatinted with the corner of the newly positioned dumpster that the garbage man left sticking about 3 feet into the road… BOOM… Mother ******!!!!

Long story short, theres now a hole through the tailgate and the frame is bent in a way that I can't get by with replacing just the shell. I was wandering if anyone has experienced the tailgate buying adventure and could let me know where to find one even cheaper than these two options.

I'm sure it is tempting to save money, but most likely, they are stolen gates for sale.

rockauto.com has them for less and if you aren't in a huge rush you can usually get a 5-10% savings code to get it even cheaper.

I recently dented the heck out of my tailgate with a silly mistake. I checked all the local paintless dent guys all who said new tailgate only. $539 directly from Toyota for a matte black shell, no handle or camera. Then you have to get it painted, all the quotes for a new one were $1100. Found a shop that buys them aftermarket, $369 or so, same deal though, no hardware and needs paint, $860.

I searched Craigslist for a while. It seemed you could find a silver or white one no problem...saw several of each. Mine is a pyrite mica. After a few weeks of this and a few email and phone exchanges with craigslist dudes I was about to order the aftermarket one and bite the bullet when one of the guys I contacted from craisgslist who originally had the magnetic grey color emailed me and had obtained one in my color. All hardware attached including the camera.

I asked him where he got it, said he works as a 'dismantler' for an auto shop. Paid $350 for it. Before I put it on I ordered the pop n lock online, the one that can be coded to your master ignition key. I always knew they were pretty easy to remove but after going through this I advise a lock! Good luck sir.

That is a good price if its the entire gate. Theres no picture of the inside of it so its hard to tell if its the entire thing or just the outer shell. These are still not painted.

Theres another guy on ebay that sells them painted to OEM colors. He has 100% feedback and wants $361 plus $100 for shipping. based on what it costs to paint one this may be cheaper in the long run and keep me from having to deal with a body shop.

Does anybody have a rough estimate of what it would cost to have one painted? any painters on here?

    Thanks, Mack

I painted 25 years ago or so. Similar to mechanic work, each part has a number of hours it pays for repair and refinish, multiplied by whatever the shop's hourly rate is, and then materials on top of that. No repair needed, so probably about 1.5 hours of labor plus materials. I would guess $200 at the low end, $400 at the high end.

Typically there are small dings on new parts that have to be repaired.

I am pretty sure you can get Duplicolor in spray cans in factory colors. For a tailgate, I would probably go that route myself and put a good clear coat on top of it. Prep it well and follow the paint instructions, don't get in a hurry.

Can’t open my tailgate with my bed cover.. it locks as well so I don’t need to do the pop n lock.

    Grateful for that.

Driving home from work Xmas eve, got tagged on the drivers side rear corner by someone texting. The truck up to this point has zero paintwork and was really clean.
    Need a silver one...

Two words: Junk Yard. In every rear end collision (the most common kind) there is at least one good front and one good rear end. You might even find in your color

I searched wrecking yards for about 8 months and all I found was tailgates with damage for about $500. I finally gave up and bought a new OEM shell and had it painted. I don’t know how every single Taco tailgate gets damaged, no matter where the truck gets wrecked.
