Auto helps with resale and it's actually more maintenance and trouble free than manual transmissions these days. I don't know if you ever tow, but I do, a lot, and I would never want a manual to tow with. Try towing a loaded, enclosed snowmobile trailer 17 hours north to Labrador City in a manual. You will want to burn the truck after that trip. That said, you should buy the truck you want, and if you want a manual, that is what you should get. I've settled before when buying a vehicle, I don't suggest it.

If your battery dies with a stick and you're pointed down hill, you can at least get it started by yourself; not possible with the automatic

If you have a manual, a lot fewer people will be asking you to borrow your truck

Personally, I'm happy with my 4 cylinder manual, just like the '88 Toyota pickup I had previously

This is good advice for anyone going to taller (and heavier tires) and doubly so if you are turning those wheels with the 4 cylinder motor. This is no so much as the 4 cylinder is weak as it is that the 4 cyl makes it's power at a bit higher RPM band than the V6. My 4.0 V6 cruises well at 2,000 rpm on flat land, if loaded wants to shift down going up freeway overpasses. The 4cyl is happy at say 2,400 RPM and still efficient there.

As far as manual or auto, I would take the easy route and go auto transmission. But if I was really strapped for cash and found a standard cab with the 2.7L and Maunal transmission it would work for me.

If I where you I would go with the auto, the two posts that you have made both point at an auto for what you need. Traffic & maybe a wife drive here and there, 4cyl. are not known for(balls) more for sipping petrol. If you no need for the balls trully than wait for your chevy.

i dont need all the balls. my game plan was a cheap 4wd p/u truck. the only plans for the truck would be tint, remote start, FJ wheels, OEM fog lights and rearview camera. -thats it.

Is it possible to do remote start on a stick? I know 4x4's have the magic button you can push (forget what it's called) to start it without stepping on the clutch. Might be possible to do if it's parked in neutral.

I think the manual is more fun. You're looking at a regular cab right? With the lack of amenities and extras with the RC's I prefer a stick with it. The only positive I can think of with the auto is that it might come with bucket seats.

I have a 2.7 with the 5-speed (1st gen), but I drove a 2.7 with the auto as well. The manual makes it seem like it has more balls and you get the added control. It makes it easier on the vehicle as well because you can get the most out of each gear. Perhaps it is worth teaching your wife to drive stick?\

EDIT: Plus, you gotta be a very special brand of stupid to break a Toyota manual tranny.
