I had this problem too. If you have a back up camera you can do the backup camera on anytime mod and with a flick of a switch you can see if its closed or not. For under 5 dollars you can get er' done lol.

its not an idicator light but just a suggestion of what i did with the same problem

Thanks. I'd love a back up camera but that would be more of a $$ mod. I don't have one now.

Place flag on tailgate, tailgate up you see flag in rear view tailgate down you don't. Duct tape and a flag probably no more than 5 bucks depending on the flag. Redneck style.

You won't even need a ground wire, only a hot lead, when you mount that pin, it'll be grounded to the body.

There was a guy that did a write-up for a switch to turn on a light whenever he opened his hood. I think it would be the same concept except the light would be on the dash and the switch by your tailgate. Let me see if I can find it.

Running a wire from the front(from the dash on a light of some sort) to back and on the side where the tailgate meets the truck. Have a button and when the tailgate is closed(tailgate pushes button in) a light will shut off on your dash.

This thread made me think... why not use a pin switch when doing a LED bed rail light install... That way.. it will automatically come on anytime the tailgate is opened. You could always add a sub switch (KILL) inline incase you need to drive with the tailgate open. Hmmm
