Are you also getting the heavy duty altenator and tranny cooler for that price?
These items are included in the factory tow package.

All the auto trannies come with the cooler(according to everything I read). I purchased a manual so that is a moot point. As far as the alternator I've never had trouble with the standard issue on any of my trucks(this is my first Toyota though).

Makes sense about the mileage difference <4X4 vs. PreRunner>...... the I4 is a suitable for the 2wd but if you're getting the 4X4 then the V6 should be the only option.

Same set-up here too, but with the Auto.

The factory tow package includes the oil cooler, tranny cooler for autos, bigger battery, bigger alt (130amp), class 4 hitch, and 7-pin wire harness. But has to be the factory tow package (TO IIRC), not a dealer added hitch. Those are usually class 3 I think, and don't come with the extra stuff (coolers, alt, battery, 7-pin). They only have the flat 4-pin connector and hitch.

When the factory oil cooler is $500 alone, the package is worth it! I like the fact I have the oil cooler even when I don't tow! Keeps the engine cooler while crawling in 4LO through mud or whatever while off roading. :D

Factory tow package is a great deal for the money, who couldnt use a bigger battery, alt, and the coolers? Its really a no-brainer even if you dont tow. I think for the average guy the TRD sport package is a better choice. With the bilstein shocks, thus a little stiffer suspension this makes for a better riding truck on road. Lets face it, even a hard core off-roader is only going to be off road maybe 10% of the time. Yeah the e-locker would be awesome but to wheel a 30 thousand dollar truck really hard youd have to be rich or crazy or maybe both:D me im just crazy, plus that hood scoop looks bad ass, and we all know that hood scoops make ya go faster:rolleyes: As far as real trucks having long beds it all depends on what your doing with it. Wood dust or whatever your spreading can be done in a short bed, you just have to make more trips, and with a new Taco thats something you wont mind doin. I know i can fit quite a few dead deer in my shorty and thats all that really matters.

Who said you have to be hard wheeling to need the locker? All it takes is some less that well maintained road to pop one rear tire off the ground and you'll be glad for the locker... Or wish you had it. :D I have lots of "seasonal use" roads near me. Technically roads, but not maintained and tend to wash out. Locker comes in handy there, or for some extra traction in mud. One wheel spinning sucks, and if you leave it in 4wd all the time, then the only option left is a winch.

I'm not rich and I wheel my truck. Maybe you think I'm crazy, but I know what my truck can do so I don't push it.

    Hi everyone,

I've been reading for a little while now but this is my first post. I've been starting to look at buying a Tacoma as well and the advice in this post has been great. I particularly agree with the comment about buying new rather than used as there's very little savings. Perhaps that's the downside of buying something with such great resale value (ie. if you decided to sell it within a short time period).

Anyway, I do have a question about US models. In Canada, I think we might be a bit more limited but wanted to verify. Can you get the 4x4 double cab short box in a V6 automatic in the US. Up here, if you want the double cab with V6 and a short box, you can only get it in a manual.

Also, what is pricing like on a double cab, V6, 4x4 TRD in the US?

    Thanks a bunch.

Ummm just for the record, that my top MPG was 29 in the 4 cyl, that was a 150 mile trip on a 1/4 tank of gas, which is roughly 5.25 gallons, you do the math, to that I must have done 130 km/h non-stop for 1 1/2 hours!

buy a base model!!! only additions being power windows and door locks... and 4x4 if thats what you want.... the whole point is to go the cheapest route off of the showroom floor! and the extra 100 or 200 that you will be saving on payment you can put it in a piggy bank... and every six months or so make it an anniversary!! no litterally if you are married or have a girlfrien get them involved!!! it leads to a couple of things....
    1} great sex
2} and them feeling that they are part of it
3} you get real time feedback
    4} did i mention great sex?:D

Well, I'm single so I have more money for toys and the truck is going to have to be my girlfriend for now until I find someone :p

I was looking at the Nissan Frontier NISMO as well. I have to say that the folks at Nissan did their work (slammin the pedal in one of those is downright spectacular, for one thing), but overall the Tacoma still wins - it was the amount of legroom that made the deciding factor - Frontier's back seat has no legroom, the front seat has annoyingly little space for the left leg.

I've decided, as most of you guys have agreed, to the 4x4 Access V6 with the TRD Offroad and the tow pkg.

I haven't bought yet, I was spending a lot of time researching, I'm trying to find an auto to test drive, plus I've pinky swore with my brother and best friend that they would get to have input before I bought. Hoping to get things no later than Friday of next week.

I found out that the Costco program wasn't all that great, it only took $500 off the MSRP. I've got some good prices from the local auto brokers, where the prices are more around $2,000 off, but I still have one more trick up my sleeve to get that price down - I'll let you guys know how it turns out.

Oh god oh god I'm picking it up today! I've researched, test drove, and flip flopped back and forth for weeks now, but it's decided, delivered, and all I have to do is sign on the line!

    2008 Doublecab 4x4
    TRD Offroad with locking differential
    tow package
    carpet floor mats :)yawn:)

Decided that the extra room in the rear seats was better suited for me. :p

I'm getting a good deal, too!

    Invoice + $150 dealer markup + $216 fees - $500 rebate - $400 recent college graduate = $534 under invoice. :D

It doesn't have the leaf spring TSB performed, and I'm going to have a tough time getting that addressed from the sounds of it... but watcha gonna do?
