Considering blacking out my wheels with plasti-dip, but want an idea of what i'll need before I do it. Should I use anything in particular to clean the wheels before applying plasti dip? and how many cans should I use to get a good finish and coat that'll last a while?

This is what I used on my stock 16" rims.

    Materials
-x2 Plasti Dip Cans (maybe 3 cans)
    -News Paper
    -409
    -Paper towels

I used 1 can per 2 wheels. 1st coat really light 2nd coat coverage. I only had it on for about a month since I sprayed them just a little bit of pealing around the tire balance weights.

    How I prepped and sprayed.
Sprayed 409 on the wheels and wiped them of with some paper towels making sure to get in all the nooks and crannies.
    Made sure everything was dry.
Put some newspaper behind the wheels against the rotors/drums to catch the over spray.
Spray a light coat of Plasti Dip then a 2nd coat. Let it dry for a while pulled the newspaper out from behind the wheels threw the back of the wheel towards the center of the truck. Rolled my truck forwards about a half turn of the wheels and put another coat on.

I like the way it came out Good Luck!

    Hey guys-

First time poster here, bought my 2014 Double Cab SR5 4x4 a week ago. My first truck, and I absolutely love it! A bit of an emotional experience selling my first car, but it's served me well for 10 years and taught me a lot about working on cars and performing your own maintenance, so I'm sure my Tacoma will serve me well for many years to come. Okay, on to something relevant to this post...

The first weekend I had my truck I Plasti-dipped all the badges, the chrome grill surround, and the rear bumper- not a fan of all the "shiny" on a truck. I want to eventually get black rims, but with a brand new set of tires it doesn't make sense to drop some serious cash on new wheels and tires at this point. I hmm'ed and haww'ed about plasti-dipping the stock steel wheels- I'm almost 30 and not looking for a cheap, boyish look, but I figured plasti-dip is quickly reversible if I don't like the effect. This afternoon I gave it a test run on one wheel, and I'm very happy with the results and will be dipping the other three tomorrow. I opted to take the wheel off the truck to dip it, didn't want to mess with masking the brakes and such.

    Tools/supplies needed:
    -Floor Jack/Jack Stands/Breaker bar/21mm socket and ratchet/Torque wrench
    -3x5 index cards
-Masking tape to cover the valve stem
-Plasti-Dip (I bought a case of 6 for various projects, probably used ~1/2 - 3/4 of a can on one wheel)

Once off, I laid the tire flat and laid a ring of index cards between the wheel and the tire in an overlapping circle. I didn't want to mess around with peeling off overspray. A few extra cards around the balance weight allowed me to cover all the rubber bits. I probably put down 5 coats, the first 3 fairly light and two thicker coats once the light coats had dried, making sure to get a good coat around the bead in order to avoid silver showing through near the outside. Dipped the center cap separately with the same number of coats to get in all the nooks and crannies.

Threw it back on and torqued it down- I think it looks pretty good for only a few bucks!

Haha don't give me any ideas- the shiny bits must go!

Nice looking truck you've got there, I like the black headlight mod. Don't know if I have the courage to crack 'em open, given the consequences ($$$) for any mis-steps!
