Do I really have to remove the whole dash to swap radios?

No, just remove the climate control panel, 4 security bolts, and the whole OEM radio should pop out. There's 4 tabs. One in each corner. It's really simple

Um...no. That may work for a Tacoma but 4th Runners are different.

Long story short, yes you have to remove several pieces of the dash, but its it very easy and can be done in under 5 minutes. There are 3 bolts that you have to remove before you can get to the radio. The radio is held in by 4 bolts. Most of the pieces just pop in and out.
