You don't need to legislate shit like that. People should know. I know if I started belting my dog, he'd strangle himself an frankly, that's more dangerous because when it happens, the driver becomes distracted.

I do believe it keeps the animal from becoming a missile in an accident and that is a benefit.

I just watched a "documentary" on automotive pet safety. Many of them break, many of the break a dogs neck. I would be opposed if there was a benefit to the dog and or owner but, seems most systems to restrain the animals are really just a "feel good" device for the guy buying it and really provide little actual function as intended. I guess what seems obvious (always drive the vehicle first) isn't. I ride my mutts but, they remain in the back seat.

A woman is Issaquah, Washington near Seattle recently drove through her house while moving her jeep in the driveway. She killed her husband and son in law and seriously injured her daughter. Witnesses reported she has her grandchild on her lap, she was allegedly drunk as well. Driving with a child or pet on you lap is not safe.

Imma go with drinking and driving is not safe. Not that a kid in your lap is but if you're not hammered and just moving the car, probably OK.

I've seen that. I guess it depends on how you restrain them. But a sudden stop means at best, your dog is coming off the seat and into the back of either the passenger or driver. And at worst, is coming into the front seat.

In my case, that's 105# and he'd likely get creamed by the airbags if they deploy...so almost anything you do to slow that down is good.

I don't think pets have any business on a persons lap while they are actually driving.
