Just got a set of Cooper Discover A/T3's in this exact size.

Was advised that 17x8.5 was the max recommended width for these tires.

Most of the better 17" wheel designs appear to only come in x9" wide.

Ended up finding and ordering 17x8 Black Rock Viper 900's. They're a 5 spoke design and come in black or silver.

    Update:

The Black Rock Viper 900's did not clear the calipers. Not even close. Noob mistake. Sending them back.

Tire dealer tried getting me into a set of Rock Star II's. Said thanks but no. Back to the drawing board, er, Photoshop.

Lots of good lookin' 17x9's out there that supposedly will NOT hold the 255's. Not so many 17x8's.

Could use input (confirmation) on whether 17x8.5's are okay for 255's. Might help answer OP's questions at the time or any others who might be focusing on noise supression during interstate miles.

    Thank you for that.

Was scoping packages at TireRack today. Noticed 245/'s recommended for 8.5"s. So the news opens up more choices.

I swear the half-mute lugs at the local rural tire dealer I was "trying" to work with:

a.) Care more about their logging skidder customers.
b.) Are all closeted, flag wrappin', wavin' GM, Ram and Ford bigots.
c.) Have no clue where half the parts on their tanks are manufactured.
d.) Get off on providing as little info as possible so as to assert an air of superior intelligence.
e.) Or snicker amongst themselves that.. I'm (unAmerican) turning Japanese, I think I'm turning..I really think so. (worse, without ever having heard the song.)

Anyway. For anyone who runs into this vibe, I learned this tire dealer uses a wheel distributor that only stocks 9 brands.
Meanwhile they have stacks of wheel catalogues on their counter to wet peoples' appetites.
It's as if they want to keep it all seeming like rocket science... they almost had me going with those tacky RockStar II's.
On the way home I had a vision of some smaht guy given a healthy kick or two to those plastic spoke covers.

Anyway it was a sight to see how beefy the Taco caliper size-weight ratio is.
Gonna take another look at the Fuel offerings while I'm at it.

And thanks for letting me rant. I won't make it a habit.

But maybe it'd be fun if somebody started a thread about running accross pockets of this coy "rice burner" prejudice across the nation.
Much rarer in Canada I'd imagine.
