Dealer put in wrong plugs !!! WTF

So here is the deal of it. Last year dealer put in new spark plugs in my 60k mile trd supercharged Tacoma. Last few months I started getting oil seepage out of my trd supercharger lid. Dealer said its normal tightened it up. Seepage got worse and car is idling bad, like lumpy as if someone is bumping into the car. Went back to dealer, same thing its normal. Extended warranty is almost up so I go through some records and find that right before winter when they replaced my spark plugs they put in the wrong ones. Instead of using the denso Ik22 or heat range equivalent they put in the iridium equivalent of the stockers so the plugs were a range 6 instead of the range 7 the supercharged tacomas are supposed to have. Now I'm concerned my motor is *ucked up or one foot in the grave as the power is bad, I have oil pooling in the intake, idles like shit but no cels. Do I go back to the dealer and have them open it up look at the plugs and force a compression/leakdown test or should I go to another dealer that is unbiased and will check it out. I'm concerned by how they've been brushing my issues off they'll try to cover up or band aid their huge mistake...ideas ?

 

I'd say if you got proof that they installed the wrong plugs I would call them out on it and make them fix whatever is damaged or got damaged. If you have it on paper then I would totally go back to them and have them deal with the issue.

 

Yea its documented, im trying to decide whether to go back to them or have another dealer verify the damage. Although at that point they might try to wash their hands of it if I get another Toyota dealership involved.

 

Exactly. I would go to the same dealer. How long ago did they swap out the plugs?

 

Over a year ago, I brought up to them the oil issue occurred after the spark plug change. It was only today that I was going through documents from service that I saw the plugs that they used and looked up the info to find that theyre the wrong plug/heat range for the supercharger. I even called their service and they told me that they have the stock plug listed for the Tacoma and that's it. I called another dealer and they looked into the info and gave me the right plug number so I know it was their part department that fubard the info. It was right before winter so it makes sense that the hotter plug was fine until the weather warmed up, that's when the oil leak popped up and the bad idling. Really frustrated as my truck was solid as a rock and ran great, now its like an injured dog.

I'm figuring them giving me the right plugs on their cost and also doing a compression/leakdown test and giving me some type of 1 month warranty on their half would be as good as I can get.

 

Yeah you need to take it back to that same dealer and make them fix the issue cause if its clearly the wrong plugs and you have paperwork they should do something about it. Not sure what the laws are but I would hold them completely responsible.

Yup exactly and its already been a year so dont wait any longer and get a hold of them and let them know whats going on.

 

Have you pulled a plug to make sure the paperwork is correct? Only takes 5 min.

Assuming they did screw up I would try and fix the issues withe the original dealer first.

 

I'm going to have them pull the plug in front of me. I'm not touching it. All I need is to have the tip or insulation fall apart on me when I pull out the crispy thing

 

They did put in the wrong plug as i saw on record....thats not the worse part. Today the truck was shuddering. Took it to another toyota dealer who I asked to run diagnostics out of my pocket....now i'm trying to hold back my absolute rage....They installed the supercharger and NEVER changed the tune over to accomodate the supercharger. The tech showed me right on the techstream screen. 5 years i've been driving on the tacomas stock tune. Car was running lean obviously the whole damn time. So you have a truck running lean and than you put in hotter plugs and wala. On the bright side its a miracle of god it lasted this long. But that explains why my truck always shifted gears like shit.

It's this kind of thing that concerns me about having an inexperienced local dealer install a SC, then do the service on it afterwards. Not that I'm incapable of doing basic stuff, but it's my lack of available time. I don't mind paying to have a shop do it, but if they're gonna muck it up, why even risk it!

 

You have to bring it to them to let them fix their mistake. If you were to take them to court the first thing a judge asks is if you brought it back to let the dealership or mechanic fix their mistake. Then if they say they won't fix it that's when you have a case.

 

Tacoma's are MAF fuel injection system so there is no tune for the added supercharger from toyota. The ecu will relearn it's tune with the added air but most will inherently run lean which is why most people add a 7th injector. have you pulled the plugs to verify you got the wrong plugs?

 

Ahh there is a tune you are supposed to add for the supercharger after installation.

 

Yup just figured that out. 1st gens don't have a tune. 2nd gens just need a reflash from toyota.

To just op just take it back to the dealer ask for the correct plugs to be installed and a reflash. Supercharger might need a rebuild if it's leaking oil.

 

I asked him to show me the plug right there after he pulled them out and it was the incorrect plug. We were in discussion over the plugs but the recently find of the lack of tune brings it to a more serious matter. I will be calling to sit down with the managers and discuss what route I want to see. I have spent a good sum of money there over the years and they will get the oppurtunity to PROPERLY correct this matter.

 

Are your injectors even yellow? If not, then those are wrong too, but I doubt that those were left out at install.

If there is some form of leakage around the metal cover that has the TRD logo, then I would have them replace that seal. That could create vacuum leak.

If the orange vacuum cap is missing or cracked, which covers a vacuum port near the firewall on the s/c, then that will also cause the engine to run poorly. Due to a vacuum leak.

Not sure where you are referring to about the oil, but one thing a lot of people with the s/c's do is to add an oil catch can. As the s/c is a super sucker on the PCV system, versus when naturally aspirated.
