Hey everyone my name Alex and I got a quick question about my hood scoop on my 2011 toyota tacoma trd. It looks like it fulfills no purpose because there is a piece of plastic in the scoop. So does it really do nothing and if so can u make it actually cool the engine down or make it have some sort of purpose. Thx. Alex .D

Well can I make it do something like remove the plastic so it is functional?

No, the hood is just for looks and removing the insert will only make your engine bay dirty.

    Welcome aboard.

    stuff
Some people have opened up the scoop, but the only thing that'll really do is make your engine bay dirty and dusty. Best thing your scoop will do for you is look good and pick up chicks, they seem to dig em. I wanted to trade mine for a non-scoop, my wife is adamantly against it. Oh, and welcome to TacomaWorld!

Nope its just for cosmetic looks so no function. I think there are a few people on here that have modded it though to make it function.

Seeing the third gen section forced me to get a Ford...
opening it up will only allow heat to dissipate from the engine compartment while at a standstill.

cant say that i've had more/less dirt from it. if that were the case, wouldnt that disprove the argument that the hood scoop is in a low pressure area of the hood and wouldn't support any gains if it were hooked to the intake?

Took the scoop out of my wife's 07 4Runner and it didn't make it any more dirty. The air passes over the scoop so dirt doesn't really get forced into it. If you are parked and its windy, more dust can get into the engine bay where the hole is for the scoop.

    Totally useless.
    Still want one.

Seems like that would prove a low pressure theory to me. If it was a high pressure area, it would suck in dirt dust etc. and make things dirtier. :notsure:

It's less Tacoma and more mod
You could make it functional by cutting out the plastic and making a cowl underneath to focus air somewhere, but you would want to make a way to stop rain and other various liquids from entering (maybe a small lawnmower air filter or something). I don't think it would help that much to have it cut open though unless you were to do some forced induction system and you wanted a super direct cold air intake. Just some ideas.

I was thinking about doing the same thing OP. I'm sure there's a piece of course red foam or some such that would be able to be trimmed to fit the opening after the plastic has been removed.

Check out some pics of a Subie WRX, I thought it looked similar. That one forces cool air onto an intercooler I believe.
