I purchased red line hood struts. I am wondering why they are to be mounted upside down. I have a 2011 camry with factory struts that are mounted with the cylinder on the bottom and the rod on top. It is also mounted that way on other model rear hatches. I wonder if it would make any difference if mounted opposite of the instructions, or if anyone has mounted them that way?

Have to check the valves in the system. Turn it upside down or how the Camry has it and push down. If it raises back up with good pressure. Then it's worth a try. It not then don't try it. Sometimes the valves are setone way for how iit's supposed to be used. If you turn it upside down it the valves won't work the same

I was going to say "because that's what the manufacturer recommends", but this seems a little more constructive.

That said, I've done the Redlines on several different cars, and they all mount with the cylinder on top. Never had any issues with any of them.

Cylinder on top is preferred in any situation. Tends to reduce wear on cylinder to rod seals. With cylinder on bottom, dirt, dust, whatever --tends to collect on face of cylinder and rod cycle pulls crap (technical term) into the seal area.

They're also self lubricating & cleaning and need to be mounted in this manor to do so the best.

Why would anyone assume that a company who's business is to make these kits wouldn't know which is the best way to mount the struts?

Don't over think something so simple.
