AZ people - I need a VW diesel engine

Anyone in AZ got any good ideas on where I could find a VW diesel engine? I want a 1.6 NA or TD that was fitted in various cars, mainly the Jetta and Rabbit in the 80s and early 90s. Need a summer project and I'm thinking of doing an engine conversion on a Suzuki Samurai.

I've done the usual searches on Craigslist and eBay, there is a company in CA selling them but they're asking lots for them. I don't see why a 20 yr old engine should be any more than $300-400. I found one in a scrapyard that had 800k on the odo.

 

Good luck finding one under $1,400. I have owned several of them, and the cars aren't worth anything, but the engines are like gold bricks. Look in New Mexico junk yards. I bought a Rabbit Pickup with the 1.6D in Farmington, NM for $500. They had no idea what they had.

 

Sorry, I should have deleted this post. I found a complete 1.6D Rabbit near me for $200! The guy didn't know what he had, said the phone was ringing constantly. Picked it up, put the engine in the Zuk. No idea if it works yet, but with only 80k on it it should be good.
