I had a 2011 Ford F-150 that I had an accident back on May 22nd that totaled my truck.

Now, it will be some time before I can get a replacement vehicle but right now I am between two models, the Toyota Tacoma and the Nissan Frontier. I'm looking at a new or used truck, extended cab or crew (double) cab, automatic transmission, and most importantly 4WD.

I want something that is reliable, can go just about anywhere while bone stock (or close to it) and can hold me, a passenger, and a couple of people.

Want I want to know is what to look for on a used Tacoma (2000 to 2012), what to check on a test drive, which is the better to get (four cylinder versus six cylinder) with 4WD, and what are common problems to be aware of. When buying used, I am not going to be buying one with a ton of miles. Any and all help is appreciated.

Takes a lickin and keeps on tickin. My buddy in hawaii had a frontier he bought used, had it for a few weeks and noticed a slight engine knock.. Then he noticed it was burning about a quart of oil every day. Then he noticed coolant in the oil. Then he had to rebuild the whole engine. Now that is only ONE case, and who knows what the previous owner did to that truck, but food for thought. ;)
