Question on the 2014's without backup camera option

I don't have a Tacoma, but lots of mirrors!
    Hey all,

One of my suppliers just emailed me to let me know they will be having a tailgate handle mounted backup camera kit for the 2014 Tacoma's equipped with the radios with the 6.1" display. I thought if the trucks had the 6.1" display radio, then they already have the backup camera, so I was wondering why they would be offering this.

But being that I don't know enough about the 2014's, so I thought I would ask the question here...

If the truck is equipped with the radio with the 6.1" display, doesn't it already come with the backup camera? Does anyone have a '14 with the 6.1" display radio that doesn't have the backup camera display?

Also, has anyone looked on their '14 to see if Toyota still puts the camera pre-wiring in place like they did on many 09-13 models? Or in the process of de-contenting the trucks like so many vehicle manufacturers do, did they also quietly eliminate this too?

    Thanks!
    Bob Prim

My old man has a base 2014 2.7 L regular cab 4WD auto with the touch screen/no back up camera. There is a wiring harness into the tail gate so I believe the wiring is there for the camera.

I did not buy the camera option with my 2014 because of their outrageous price, so I have the Entune touch screen radio. Separate from the truck Toyota gave me a plastic adapter to connect a tailgate camera to their truck bed wiring which they say are under the vehicle behind the bumper. Now I'm waiting for a camera supplier to confirm that their camera will work.

I've e-mailed with Camera Source and they say they expect to have a tailgate camera available next week and are taking standby orders. I didn't get a price so haven't placed a hold. I'll see what next week's news is.

Yesterday Rostra Precision Controls informed me that their camera is now on the market. I looked at their parts & instructions and see that you have to run their 23 foot cable all the way through the cab and to the 6.1" screen. I didn't look up the price.

I'm going to wait until I get my fiberglass shell installed next week to see if I want a locking tailgate before I put in the backup camera.

Also, I suspect that CopperZ71 will be marketing cameras out of eBay soon.

Would any Tacoite who installs one of these in a 2014 please post his/her results here?

    Thanks

Stphnman, I looked up the camera you recommended but it is for sedans, etc. I have a pickup and I don't think that camera works on the 2014 pickups.

I have a 2014 Double Cab SR (not SR5) and used the Camera Source Kit.
Mine was plug and play. I had to replace the cable inside the tailgate with their supplied one. Look at the connection under the truck near the spare tire where the cable from the tailgate mates to the truck harness IF there are 4 cables to the connectors and 4 wires out you are wired to the Entune Display. If there are less than 4 wires on the truck side of the connection you will also need the cable that runs all the way to the head unit.
At least one member with an Access cab found out after installation that he had to have the extra cable. That turns a simple job into a bit more complex one.

Toyota has two part numbers and the parts look the same, but the back connectors are different, and the shape is near the same, but the 86790-04020 camera is a bit smaller. These are the OEM parts.

Note that the older version, 86790-04010, which I know works in an 09, has four prongs in the harness connector, and it has five little slots all the way around the harness perimeter.

The newer version, 86790-04020, which was successfully used on this board in a plug an play works on a 2014. This harness connector has 6 prongs, and more of a bottom clip.

Bob, I bought a '14 Taco with 6.1" screen and no backup camera. It had complete wiring already installed for the camera including tailgate wiring and camera mounting bracket, but it had a dummy camera mounted in the factory tailgate handle.

I bought a camera from Camera Source earlier this month and installed it in about an hour. The hardest part was figuring out how Toyota's plastic brackets release. The aftermarket camera came with the tailgate wiring so I replaced Toyota's and connected it under the bed on the right side.

    It works as advertised.
