Are these 4.0 motors naturally noisy. When I say noisy, I mean with the windows up and radio off, I can hear the valve train clatter or maybe it's the injector noises inside the cabin.

If I roll the windows down, then drive next to a wall the sound is similar to a badly running Ford Vulcan or Chrysler 3.3L V6 with 200k miles on it.

My truck has 57k miles on it, I bought it two weeks ago used. It runs and drives incredibly smooth, and I'm getting expected gas milaege, it's just the sound ofthhe motor that is kind of embarrassing for such an over-hyped vehicle. Even at idle, and standing next to the truck, there is quite a bit of tick, tick, tick.....etc... I have heard other 4.0L Toyota V6's running at stop lights, and the valve train or injector clatter is more pronounced than other trucks.

Just curious if this was normal or not?

As an example my 2014, 2.7 is fairly quiet and isn't audible from inside the cabin at all. But that truck also only has 2200 miles on it, and is quite a bit less powerful. Not complaining about the 4.0L, I love the way it drives, just want to know if the engine noises are normal for this beast.

Lol, didn't know the 4.0 had it's own nickname for this.

There is a way to deal with the noise associated with an aluminum engine. DTLTs, y-pipe, at2525xl, bad a** stereo system.
I compared mine to my old 4runner with a 22re and 500k+ when it comes to noise.
