    I have a 1999 Toyota Tacoma PreRunner SR5 2.7L 4cyl w/ 194,000 miles. With stock everything besides tires. I have 31x10.5R15.

I have been having this loud humming/roaring noise coming from what sounds like the rear end of my truck. I can't figure out what it is. I have changed the oil in my axle and drowned the noise a tad bit, but still loud and annoying. I did some research and saw that the newer (09-11) Tacoma's have the same problem (at least it sounds like it). I could really use some help from the great community of here.

One more question for the road, where are the grease fittings on a 99 Taco?

Thanks in advance everybody and god bless!

Sounds like wheel bearing. Only other thing could be carrier bearing.

What did the oil look like when you drained it?

It was great and smelled like the south bound end of a donkey! So a rear wheel bearing or is there no such thing. And what is the carrier bearing?

I would look for Grease every where near the wheel bearing. I just had to replace my front one and there was grease everywhere .

On 2nd gen Tacos there's a carrier bearing supporting the middle of the driveshaft where it changes direction. Not sure if 1st gen Tacos are the same:

If you are confident the noise is from behind you, do this:

    1. Put the rear axle on jack stands. Chock the front wheels.
    2. Make sure transmission is in Neutral and parking brake is off.
    3. Rotate each rear wheel by hand and check for noise.
    4. Rotate driveshaft by hand and check for noise in carrier bearing (if present) and each U-joint.
    5. Check for play and backlash in each of the U-joints.

Okay I currently don't have a jack right now cause my friends shop is locked but when it opens back up I will try those things and check my wheel bearing thank you.

Could be a rear tire going bad or tread separating.
