I've tried the LED light bar route for off road lighting and have largely been disappointed. I guess that I'm just too used to big halogens.

I'd like to try going with HIDs this time around. I'd like something that is relatively budget friendly, but also don't want to do a conversion.

What lights have you had success with and what brands should I be looking at and what specific models? I'm thinking something in the 55 watt range.

Ok, maybe my question is a bit too general.

What about something like this from ebay, 7-inch, 55watt? Worth having? Or will I be disappointed?

What was the disappointment with the LED light bar? That would prob be a factor in a suggestion...

If you don't like light bars I would look for used Baja Designs, Hella, or Vision X HID lights. Lots of people are changing to LED light bars so you can get great deals on perfectly good lights.

Look on Craigslist, Dezert Rangers, and on Race Dezert for the best deals.

I'm not a LED hater and I haven't stopped using LEDs, they seem to be pretty good for short distances. But they seem to die out past a 100 feet or so.

I've been in rigs with 100 watt halogens that were amazing. So, I'm looking to bury something similar behind my front grill.

I initially said that I didn't want to do a conversion, but the ability to choose the color temperature is appealing and seems relatively affordable. Thanks for the suggestion.

I was in Baja this week with the Desert Assassins group doing a TV Baja missions tour. I saw them using Rigid LED bars with combinations of spot/ driving/ cornering (fog) lenses and they could light up the helicopter where it was parked over 500 feet away easily. They did say for dusty conditions that switching to the amber lens was amazing.

On my Tacoma I have HID (35 watt, 5,000º) converted Hella 4000 spots, one Kragen 'Euro' (driving) beam and one Cibie Super Oscar 100 watt halogen driving beam.

The issue I have with HIDs is they take several seconds to achieve full illumination and the LEDs and old halogens are instant.
