Hi guys, my 1995 V6 SR5 4x4 Ext cab has a rusty muffler that makes me sound like I'm a teenager with an ego issue. (sorry to all you teens with image issues) ;)

The previous owner had replaced the catalytic converter after it was stolen so it is welded inline with the existing pipes. My question is this: for lowest cost, do I simply order an OEM muffler somewhere & have a shop simply cut out the old one & weld in the new one? If so, what is the best purchasing resource for quiet, replacement mufflers & what price is normal for this work in CA?

    Thanks for any suggestions!

Call some shops, get some quotes. A simple cut-out-weld-in shouldn't be too expensive, however, I hear that everything's expensive in CA. Make sure you go someplace that'll stand by the work, though. You don't want to have to pay extra for another visit because they pooched a weld and it leaks, or positioned the muffler wrong and it rattles against the frame/body.

No emissions for you?I took mine to local muffler shop and they welded appropriate muffler in. 145.00 last year. No problems.

This is a learning curve. I ordered a direct fit Bosal and went to a couple of shops nearby. They treated me like I was the biggest A-hole who ever drove up because I have my own part. I wanted to pay for their expertise but they are more interested in mark-up on part sales. One jackass snorted that he didn'thave a pipe-stretcher without seeing the part. And I had taken both my cars in for significant service in the past. Not any more. So now I am wondering if there is a clamp that I can get or does it have to be welded? Anyone know?

There's a way to get around that. Don't waste your time driving around. Call the muffler shop first and ask if they'll install a muffler if you bring in your own. if you get a no, call the next shop. I called around until I found a muffler guy who was happy to install my muffler, and I've been going there ever since. :)
