detailing thread

I thought this was going to be a thread on what everyone has done and how to detail their Taco to looks its best. If I am right, then here is my first post - more to come (depending on how this thread goes ).

Detailed engine compartement.



I believe in keeping my engine compartment clean and looking good. A clean engine runs cooler and is easier to work on and spot leaks.

I use WD-40 to clean the engine compartment. Spray it down and rinse it off. Shines, lubricates/conditions wires/hoses/plastics while water proofing electronics to a degree (or so the can states!). After the engine is dry I touch up with a paper towel and WD-40 to add more shine to the rubber/plastic components. I've been doing this for over 25 years and my wifes 1990 nissan sentra still shines!

The VVTI on the valve cover I did simply with 320 grit sand paper to ruff up the area to be painted, used a light application of mineral spirits to remove any oil residue and painted the letters/logo red with Testor model paint. My Taco is Impulse Pearl Red. - I did this on my wifes sentra 19 years ago on the aluminum valve cover and it's still there like the day I applied it.

 

Hey you guys have you ever i mean ever tried spraying lemon pledge on your glide?

Here's the thing you wax & buff your glide then aplly lemon pledge just misting your ride section by section,buff then wax again and buff and watch the results come alive,your glide will look wet and the elements of the weather will slide right off and the shine will last longer,believe me i thought the same thing you do yeah right never happen but it does ever see the limos and they look like they're wet all the time this is their secret to keeping it that way and low maintenance,try it you won't be dissapointed,i live in germany where it is mostly farm land and the dirt and dust is relentless,all i do is dust the truck and the shine is back will last a month without washing,will also stop the water spots from penetrating since the water sheets off when you rinse and dry your babies
give it a try oh by the way i use ZYMOL wax on my baby the next washing i do i will add pics so you guys believe what you see and what i am saying....

I have heard of car lots washing their vehicles and spraying windex on the vehicles then wiping it off to keep a shine. Never heard of using lemon pledge, some question what is "glide"? Is it ok to spray on the black plastic or just the painted areas?

 

I hope you were planning on new tires B4 U did that !!!

well the answer to your question about the black rubber and plastic is yes you can spray irt on it will not harm ,on the contrary it will protect it as well,gives it a nice sheen,just remember to wash the glide thoroughly and and apply wax,buff,then spray lemon pledge then buff,then wax again then buff and see the results.
answer to your second question is GLIDE means your ride,your truck ........i'm from nyc so thats the street lingo,

Anybody that puts Windex or furniture polish on their paint is un-educated about proper car care.

 

You mean you spray WD-40 all over and then just hose off? Do you let it sit for a certain amount of time before you hose off?

 

I don't spray everywhere, only where needed prior to rinsing. All rubber, plastics parts. And painted areas inside of engine compartment that are soiled. Then if patient enough wait about 10 mins before rinsing. WD-40 is great for removing gunk, moisture proofing electronics, etc. Also try using it to remove the sticky residue left from stickers - works great.

After drying, I apply a protective coat of WD-40 only on the plastics/rubber components to protect & shine and on the painted metal areas it makes the paint shine and keeps the rust down, and then clean up easier the next detailing. I've been doing it for many years and keeps the rust down greatly in that compartment.

 

I washed my truck yesterday and meant to hose down the engine but forgot. I know it's a little dirty so... could I spray it all over the first time and hose off?

 

Sure can. But, if you have a heavy build up of oil/grease etc. I'd use a petrolium degreaser similar to "Gunk" on those areas, and follow up in those areas with the WD-40 later. (Gunk leaves a white residue sometimes when it dries and the WD-40 will remove it)

I personally hardly use WD-40 on the block, won't hurt - but I don't want to spray in areas that aren't needed and have to buy another gallon of WD-40. But then if it's kept clean from start the block won't have to be cleaned like that for at least a year or so. But I do use it on the black valve cover!

After it dries spray the WD-40 on the hoses, plastic parts etc. I use a paper towel on the plastic parts to apply it.

Post what you think about the effect after you do it. I'm positive you will be pleased.
