Hey, looking for advice and thoughts. I am thinking about mounting gas cans (Rotopax) to the exterior of my tailgate. There will be two three gallon cans on either side of the handle, total of 12 gallons. I want to go this route instead of a bumper swing out because I can still haul stuff with the tailgate open/down if I mount it to the tailgate. I am thinking I will need to reinforce the metal panel to support the weight.
Any ideas or is this just a bad idea?

There was a guy on ToyotaNation.com who mounted water cans inside his tailgate. To me it sounds like it would be kinda hard to manage the tailgate. At about 6#/gallon.... opening the tailgate with about 72# of liquid in it sounds problematic to me. You may even snap your tailgate cables since they are only crimped on. It worries me to even sit on the tailgate. Granted I weigh a lot more than 72#, but that quick stop when falling open would concern me.

I know there's aftermarket add-on spring style tailgate opener thingies, any idea how much weight they're rated for? this could solve the problem of extra weight slamming the gate open..

Ok, figured it out. Going to build a swing out from the after market bumper. But I'm going to sleeve the tube where the carrier attaches to the hinge with a pin. Basically making it removable. Take it off when I need to haul something with tailgate down.
