My daughter's 1991 4Runner has started to take dump after only having it since April '14. I took it for a spin and 1, 2, 3, 4 gears are still working but it won't shift into 5 or reverse anymore. Although the first 4 gears still grab the shifter is all over the place. When I tried putting it in 5 the shifter goes way forward, way to the right, and is twisting almost 180 degrees while doing so. The shifter goes into 4 instead of reverse. There isn't even a hole to go to for reverse anymore.

Any opinions on whether it's just the linkage, just the transmission, or possibly both? I have to say that this is my very first transmission problem with any vehicle so I'm a bit green on the subject.

Thanks in advance for any and all ideas, opinions, and advice.
