So I had my DTRL start to melt.. I am a 2010 Tacoma w/ 95k out of warranty... I know of a few of you guys who have had the problem.. well today there is a solution.. I took the TSB for melting headlights to my local dealership ( Ralph Hayes Toyota , Anderson,SC) I got new headlights the new model numbers that aren't supposed to melt. I was told it is now a recall up until 2015.. for 2005-11 models
    my old headlightsNCM_0218[1].jpg

my receipt for the new ones NCM_0220[1].jpg they replaced both as the TSB stated..

I hope this is true, I just bought a 2010 and have the cracked burned out DRL's and it sucks! a few of these so called TSB's should be recalls, I need the transmission flash too and I am sure I'll end up paying.

oh.. new leaf springs and propeller shaft (axle warp) =(

kinda surprised, they are annoying issues to have on something just purchased.

On 2013 I just leave them off. Melting problem solved. When I hear there is an official recall I guess I will start turning them on.

Is this something that a owner of a 14' should be concerned with or did they change the DRL bulbs after 11'?

I do like having mine on, it does help visually for other drivers.

Not sure if bulbs changed but seeing as the entire headlight was redesigned we can only hope we don't see any issues down the road.

The +12 headlights are completely different. There is no lens directly in front of the DTRL bulb so you can run them all the time. No chance of something like that happening as they completely redesigned the light assembly and there is at least 4" in front of the bulb. I never turn mine off.

is that what was causing the melting ? in 2011 and earlier there is an inner lens close to bulb holding in the heat ?

That is correct. I had a 2011 and though I never had a issue with the melting lens I can see how it could happen. The 11 on back Lens sits directly in front of the bulb. In 12 they completely redesigned the headlight assembly. There is no lens in front of the DTRL bulb now.

Do you have a link to where Toyota says it is officially a recall? I have a 2009 and was only 500 miles over my warranty and the dealership refused to cover it. Until it is officially a recall I'm not going to try to and go to the dealership again.
