The dealer put the stowaway roof rack on my 2012 4 door tacoma when I purchased it. I use this rack a lot in the summer to carry a canoe and a kayak. After 2 seasons, one of the torx head pivot bolts is loose and so the whole crossbar wiggles. Frankly, I have never felt real comfortable with using the rack as I do.

Questions: 1) can the pivot bolts be tightened? It is not a matter of tightening with a torx driver. The bolt is loose under the rack - where it screws into whatever it screws into. I have removed the torx bolt and cannot see anything, and I am hesitant to remove the whole rack system.

    2) Can I remove the entire rack system and replace the weatherstripping on the roof?

    3) Is there a more stable roof rack that fits using the bolt holes on the roof?

I live an hour from the dealer and will hopefully see them soon (they haven't been any help over the phone).

    Thanks

There are other racks that also fit the holes that the factory racks use. I personally like the looks and functionality of the this one.

Thanks. I tightened the crossbar by adding a washing under the bar on the torx bolt. However - I just don't trust the bars (I carry canoes and kayaks frequently).

Thanks for the link - but all I want in a roof rack are the crossbars (no basket).

I am sure I will eventually remove the stowaway system and replace it with a Thule rack.

Do I get the weatherstrip from my dealer? Do you think the roof (the channel where the screw holes are) can be returned to factory good??

Check the buy, sell, trade section. They come up pretty often here. You can get them from the dealer or probably Camelback Toyota.

I would put a piece of 3m tape over where the factory rack was bolted down.
